Is Akkermansia the “next big” probiotic for gut health? Research has shown Akkermansia muciniphilla is a “mucin-loving” gut bacterium that makes up 1-3% of a healthy microbiome and plays a key role in maintaining gut lining integrity, supporting immune balance, and producing short-chain fatty acids that influence metabolism and GLP-1 signaling. The early research suggests it may help reduce body weight and fat mass (especially in people with low baseline levels). It is also documented to improve blood sugar control and modulate inflammation. However, Akkermansia is not found in typical probiotics or fermented foods. Quality, live vs pasteurized strains, and proper formulation are important if choosing a supplement.
