π’ Attention Seniors & Caregivers! Let's Talk About Bed Sores! π’
Bed sores (also called pressure ulcers) are preventable, and taking a few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping skin healthy and comfortable. They can develop when there's too much pressure on one area of the skin for too long, often over bony parts of the body.
Here are some friendly tips to help avoid them:
Move It to Improve It! If you spend a lot of time sitting or lying down, try to change your position frequently. Aim to shift your weight every 15 minutes if in a chair, and every 1-2 hours if in bed. Even small movements help!
Skin Check, Daily! Take a moment each day to check your skin, especially over your hips, tailbone, heels, and elbows. Look for any redness, warmth, tenderness, or changes in skin color. If you spot something, let your doctor or caregiver know.
Keep Skin Clean & Dry: Gently wash your skin with mild soap and warm water, then pat it dry thoroughly. If you experience incontinence, clean and dry the area promptly.
Stay Hydrated & Eat Well: Proper nutrition and plenty of fluids are vital for healthy skin and overall well-being.
Cushion Up! Consider using special cushions or mattresses designed to relieve pressure if you're spending extended periods in a bed or chair.
Remember: Your comfort and health matter! If you have concerns or notice any signs of bed sores, please reach out to your healthcare provider right away. Early detection and care are key!
