Creepy dudes from the 1600's are why you gave birth on your back.

Lying on your back to give birth closes down your pelvis and almost always increases pain. So why is this the most commonly used position for birth in the world today?

Because of King Louis XIV & Dr. Françios Mauriceau.

At a time when only women attended births, it's reported that King Louis XIV insisted on watching his offspring be born. He didn't like the obstructed view caused by a birthing stool (most common position at the time), so he insisted his wife or mistress give birth on her back with her legs in stirrups.

Once word got out that this is how royalty gave birth, the new position began to gain popularity.

At the same time, French doctor Mauriceau, who treated pregnancy as a pathology (which continues today) thought women would breathe more easily and have reduced pain when lying in bed for birth. His view of pregnancy as a disease had a hand in the change from midwife-attended birth to the primarily surgeon-attended birth that we see today.

Though this position is usually the worst option for the woman giving birth, it is still the easiest & most comfortable for those attending the birth. The doctor/midwife/nurse can simply sit on a stool and have a perfect visual, which is a good part of why it is still used today.

Many women are told this is the only position "allowed", when in fact positions that allow gravity to assist (standing, hands-and-knees, squatting) are usually better choices, and are always options. Even if you have an epidural you can still get into some of these positions with assistance.

One of the things I wish for modern day obstetrics is that they catch up and recognize the reality that babies are SO smart.

They are not helpless, unknowing critters needing to be saved from the birth canal; but truly active participants in their own births.

Their bodies are so innately primed to be born and meet their parents. They know their parents voices. Their energy. They almost always know when it’s time to be born, initiating a sequence that is so mysterious and sacred, science still can’t quite crack its code.

Babies know what they need to be born safely and are excellent catalysts for creating the labor pattern they need to be birthed as safely as possible. We know they can utilize bio-directional communication via the umbilical cord. They have the magic ability to talk to you!

Their magic wisdom also includes infant reflexes. Reflexes perfected over thousands of years to assist the birth of the baby safely for the birth-dyad and to assist in the thriving of a newly born babe.

If you watch an undisturbed birth…you will see this beautiful dance a baby does to help itself spiral through the tight, bony passage and then again to help the repeatedly find their way to the breast.

If we were to, on all levels of society, recognize the inherent wisdom in babies, what changes would be see.

I’ll never stop telling parents that their baby’s are oh so wise and the perfect person to listen to as they navigate their new roles as parents.

Babies are tiny, mysterious geniuses. Let them lead.

There is a phase in labor, appropriately called transition, where a woman will meet her breaking point. She'll feel as though she just can't go on, and she is right. The maiden in her is not strong enough for the task at hand. It's during this time the maiden dies so that the woman can be reborn as a mother, with her child. A new, more capable version of herself with far more strength than she has ever known. From Maiden to Mother.

It is very common to worry that these things can mean low milk supply. However, in and of themselves, they are not a sign of low milk production. If you are concerned, talk to a lactation consultant.
