Trouble swallowing? It might be more than just heartburn. Achalasia is a rare esophageal disorder that affects the ability of the esophagus to move food into the stomach. People with achalasia often experience difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or regurgitation of food. This condition occurs when the nerves in the esophagus become damaged, causing the muscles to lose their ability to contract properly and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to stay closed. If you’re experiencing persistent swallowing difficulties, our specialists at Rockford Gastroenterology Associates can help. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve quality of life. Call to schedule an evaluation or visit our website to learn more - https://www.rockfordgi.com/gastroenterology-conditions/achalasia-rockford-il/
