Northern Illinois Hospice

Northern Illinois Hospice We were the first hospice provider in our region and one of the first 50 hospices in the nation. While all hospices in the U.S. The answer is yes.

are mandated by the federal government to provide certain services to terminally ill individuals, not all hospices are the same. We were one of the first hospices in the United States, and since 1979, thousands of families have turned to us for quality end of life care. We often hear from area physicians and nursing facilities we provide hospice care the way it should be done. What matters most to all families is whether we will take care of their loved ones in the best way possible. That is our commitment to you.

We walked the walk! It was a beautiful morning for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s event at Sportscore on Saturday. Our team loved hosting the popular Pet Zone again this year and welcoming lots of four-legged friends and pet lovers to our booth.

Thanks to all those who came out to raise funds for the battle against Alzheimer’s!

He still likes to clown around! Roger Norman is one of those people whose spirit you don’t forget. A longtime Rockford resident, a former mail carrier, and a father of six, Roger has always lived life with purpose and a good sense of humor.

Married to his sweetheart Connie for 57 years, he’s enjoyed being known as “Sonshine the Clown” or “The Balloon Man.” That’s because Roger brought joy for decades first through puppet shows at church, balloon animals at hospitals, and spontaneous smiles at restaurants. “I’m still a clown,” he says with a grin.

These days, Roger is living with heart issues and receives palliative care at home. That’s where our incredible nurse practitioner, Toni Hughart, DNP APRN FNP-BC, comes in. During her visits, Toni checks his lungs, takes his vitals, helps monitor memory changes, and, just as importantly, shares a laugh or two. “Toni’s got a great sense of humor,” says Roger. “She’s a sweetie. I just know that she’s there for us.”

Before starting Northern Illinois Palliative Care, Roger and Connie had to make long trips back and forth to Madison for appointments at a memory clinic. “We didn’t understand palliative care at first,” says Connie, “but the doctor said to follow through. And I’m so glad we did. It’s comforting. Toni tells us about resources we never knew about. Now Roger can focus on staying as active as he can right here at home.”

Roger still enjoys the simple things in life like puzzles and fishing. “I just like to drop a line in the water whether it’s down at the river or out at Rock Cut,” he said. Roger is proof that a diagnosis doesn’t define you, and that humor, love, and a little balloon magic can help you carry on.

Cheers for 35 years! We just have to give another shout out to Tracey Armstrong for her amazing commitment and longtime service to Northern Illinois Hospice.

“I used to be one of the youngest ones here, “said Tracey with a smile. “But over the years I’ve seen so much change as we keep evolving and growing. They’ve been good changes!”

Tracey first got connected to our agency when her parents became volunteers here years ago. She began volunteering too before becoming a staff member along with one of her sisters. Now the Senior Fiscal Assistant says she’s thrilled to carry on her family’s legacy. “This place is part of me,” said Tracey. “I really believe in this organization—in our integrity and reputation.”

She remembers long ago when we provided hospice to fewer than 10 patients at a time. Now she loves seeing generation after generation of families turning to us for care. “We were built on a strong foundation and that serves us well even today,” said Tracey.

When she’s not at work you might spot Tracey reading mysteries or singing—she’s even been a soloist at past candlelight remembrance services.

Thank you, Tracey, for all that you continue to do to help our team!

Fun on the farm! It was a very special 95th birthday for JoAnne Lyford and her family. And we were glad to play a part in it!

JoAnne is one of our patients and grew up on one of the family farms just outside Rockford in the tight-knit little town of Argyle. She married another local, Wilbur Reid, and together they raised a family before eventually moving into Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center back in the ‘80s. But their family loved returning to the farm each year for fun gatherings like summer potlucks and Christmas.

A few weeks back, the family thought it would be perfect to celebrate JoAnne’s big birthday back at the farm but getting her there posed a challenge. Kathy, one of JoAnne’s daughters, wondered if we could help in some way. So, they made a connection through our team to our “Wish” program. We reached out to our friends at Hart Mobility LLC . And JoAnne made it to the farm for her birthday!

“We thought it was a great idea to have mom’s party at the farm,” said JoAnne’s daughter, Mary. “My mom loves purple, so we brought out the purple cowboy hats from her 90th party and even gave her a purple boa to wear. The party was the most wonderful thing! Northern Illinois Hospice was great to work with. We are forever grateful!”

Helping those on our care continue cherished family traditions is just one of the many ways that Northern Illinois Hospice Foundation’s “Wish” program makes a difference.
