The 2025 Summer Science & Summer Medical Research Training (SMaRT) Forum happened on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025.

The forum marks the culmination of an intensive, eight-week paid research internship for outstanding high school and college students from across the region. Working alongside faculty researchers, these students explored critical topics in biomedical science, including cancer biology and gene regulation, neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases and biomedical engineering and organoid modeling.

Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (MBT) Program students and College of Pharmacy students attended the 24th annual Midwest DNA Repair Symposium on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. The conference brings together students and experts in pharmacology and DNA studies for the two-day event.

The Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (MBT) program inducted nine new members into its Student Congress for the 2025-2026 academic year. The MBT Student Congress assists with activities related to academics, research, programmatic event planning and student ambassadorship.

The incoming student leaders received certificates and gave acceptance speeches in a small ceremony on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Five students from the UICOMR Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (MBT) Program received the UIC Chancellor's Student Service and Leadership Award (CSSLA) during the annual ceremony on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Student Center East, in Chicago.

Receiving awards are second-year MBT students Nithin Raj Senthil Raj, Sai Navya Mohanarangan, Priya Kunhiraman, Manaswini Vijayaraghavan and Abishek Kamalakkannan.

The CSSLAs recognize outstanding student leaders and student volunteers who, while maintaining high academic achievement, demonstrate a commitment to the UIC community through participation in student organizations and campus activities through active service and community engagement.

Earlier this month, Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (MBT) Program students from the UICOMR Department of Biomedical Sciences were invited to submit static images evocative of their research. Last week, all UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford campus community members and those affiliated with the MBT Program were asked to vote for their favorite images.

The top three winners will receive a prize, and the images will be used to promote, advance, and represent the MBT program both in printed and digital media.

1st place: “The Brain’s Hidden Galaxy: A Cosmic Birth of Connections” by Sarvika Periyapalayam Murali.

2nd place: “Neurons - Nature’s Web” by Priya Kunhiraman.

3rd place: “Witnessing Astrogenesis: Visualizing the development of neural guardians through precise molecular probing” by Manaswini Vijayaraghavan.

Five students joining UICOMR's Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (MBT) Program for Spring 2025 started classes on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025. The students come to Rockford from Bangladesh, India and the United States.

The students participated in orientation last week, which helped them prepare for their program, which focuses on pharmaceuticals, vaccines and devices for the medical industry.

Mathew Mathew Thoppil, PhD, received a $50,000 Phase I Proof of Concept Award from UIC Innovation to continue developing biosensor technology to detect pancreatic cancer in its earlier, more treatable stages. He will also receive support from the UIC Office of Technology Management to help bring the device to market. Dr. Mathew is the co-director of the Regenerative Medicine and Disability Laboratory, director of faculty research and the Cedric W. Blazer Endowed Professor of Biomedical Sciences at UICOMR.
