Ever heard of myofunctional therapy?!
Myofunctional therapy looks at how the muscles of the mouth and face work together for everyday functions like breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speech.
One pattern we often start with is mouth breathing. Do you notice your child breathing through their mouth while watching TV or relaxing? When they’re just hanging out, does their mouth tend to stay open?
At mealtimes, do they cough, gag, or seem uncomfortable when chewing or swallowing?
You might also think back to early habits. Did your child use a pacifier or suck their thumb longer than their peers?
Oral structures play an important role in coordinating speech, too. Is your child using the same speech sounds as their peers, or are certain sounds still difficult or delayed?
👩👦🤍 If you notice a few of these patterns, your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy. This is one of the services we offer to help support children and families in a thoughtful, whole-child way.
