Fingers crossed that the synchronous energy of Long Table Wellness’ mission with the history of this foundation is felt by them as well.

“The J.M. Kaplan Fund was established in 1945 by Jacob Merrill Kaplan after he sold his business, The Welch’s Grape Juice Company, to the growers, creating an agricultural co-op that still thrives today.”

We would be so thrilled to have their support as we create a new kind of agricultural/wellness cooperative to bring people together for greater resilience and community in Midcoast Maine.

Long Table Wellness is applying for a grant from a private foundation at the end of this month to fund a cooperatively run freight farm to provide local produce year round.

We started this project as a partnership with AIO Food and Energy Assistance and they hold the funds we have raised so far.

Gonna be an epic year for the gardens, inside and out. Meyer lemon blossoms…delicious. Soon hanging strawberries for the windows and asparagus roots going in to supplement the plants I hope to harvest a shoot or two from this year…

We should not rise above the earth with the aid of “spiritual” intuitions and run away from hard reality, as so often happens with people who have brilliant intuitions. We can never reach the level of our intuitions and should therefore not identify ourselves with them. Only the gods can pass over the rainbow bridge; mortal men must stick to the earth and are subject to its laws. In the light of the possibilities revealed by intuition, man’s earthliness is certainly a lamentable imperfection; but this very imperfection is part of his innate being, of his reality. He is compounded not only of his best intuitions, his highest ideals and aspirations, but also of the odious conditions of his existence . . . That we are bound to the earth does not mean that we cannot grow; on the contrary it is the sine qua non of growth. No noble, well-grown tree ever disowned its dark roots, for it grows not only upward but downward as well. The question of where we are going is of course extremely important; but equally important, it seems to me, is the question of who is going where. The “who” always implies a “whence.” It takes a certain greatness to gain lasting possession of the heights, but anybody can overreach himself. The difficulty lies in striking the dead centre. For this an awareness of the two sides of man’s personality is essential, of their respective aims and origins. These two aspects must never be separated through arrogance or cowardice.

Medical billing is a black box with mostly unknowable rules that benefit insurance companies and large medical facilities.

Providers of all types and patients can feel stuck with what these often self-interested institutions will offer at unknown prices.

Until they discover another way to deliver healthcare and focus on wellness…

For example, the MD who wrote this NYTimes piece knows that his family’s X-rays should have cost $100 each, instead of the $1200 they were charged. But does he know that the simple answer he was looking for (was the bone broken?) could just as easily have been found with a $30 tuning fork? See first comment for links with more information.

Hospital outpatient departments, or HOPDs, are encouraging a surprise scourge on medical costs. It’s patients who bear the burden.
