So often, when we say, we are “protecting our peace“ what we may be really protecting is our comfort. We step back, go, quiet, or disconnect, not because we found peace, but because we found temporary relief from overstimulation, confrontation, or emotional overwhelmed.

The problem is avoidance and suppression can masquerade as peace.

We call it peace when we stop arguing, but really we’ve stopped engaging.
We call it peace when we withdraw, but really we’ve stopped feeling.
We call it peace when we “let things go“ but really we’ve stopped allowing ourselves to care.

This kind of piece isn’t calm. It’s collapse. It’s not emotional regulation. It’s emotional shut down.

Girl, be TOO much. Live out loud. Knee slap laugh. Be vulnerable. Dance in public. Have hard conversations. Say “no” without explanation. Heal out loud. Celebrate your growth. Tell people when you miss them, when you need them and when you’re sorry

September is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month. Every year, we see more conversations happening around su***de, and that visibility matters. The truth is, many more people wrestle with these thoughts in silence than most of us realize.

If someone opens up to you, they’re not asking you to solve their pain. They’re asking to be seen and heard. Your role is to hold space. To listen with curiosity and compassion, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Su***de prevention is less about having the perfect words and more about being willing to sit with someone in their darkest moments.

Why presence matters more than perfect wordsSeptember is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month. Each year, we see more intentional conversations around su***de, suicidality, and suicidal ideation. This is an important focus, because the truth is, far more people struggle with these thoughts in sile...

In relationships, rifts and ruptures happen. Repair is the way in which we close the emotional gap where rejection and resentment can seep in. Repair is not just about resolving the conflict, but it’s about strengthening connections.

September is Su***de Awareness and Prevention month. Even though this important topic is worthy of discussion year around, September provides that opportunity to have conversations with intention. Please join NAMI for an informative discussion about a difficult topic, especially among communities of color. I’ll be there. Will you?

Join us for Part Two of NAMI’s Virtual Town Hall Series: Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges—"Breaking the Silence: Su***de Awareness in Black/African Ancestry Communities."

Su***de is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10–14, with rising rates among Black youth. Stigma, inequity, and lack of culturally responsive care often silence those most affected.

Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 3 PM ET, hear from:
Victor Armstrong, MSW — VP for Health Equity & Engagement, American Foundation for Su***de Prevention
Dr. Rosalynn Thyssen — Assistant Professor & Founder, Traeh Thyssen Have A Heart Foundation
Dr. Sidney Hankerson — Associate Professor & Project Leader, The Triumph Study in NYC

They’ll share insights, strategies, and hope for change.
