🎉 Fun Fact Friday: Bullying Prevention Starts Early! 💪

Did you know?

✨ Kids who learn empathy and conflict resolution early are less likely to bully — and more likely to stand up for others.

That’s right! Teaching kids to recognize emotions, communicate assertively (not aggressively!), and respect differences can reduce bullying before it starts. It’s not just about “don’t be mean” — it’s about building emotional smarts and kindness muscles! 💬💛

🛡️ Quick Tip: Practice “what would you do?” scenarios at home.

For example: “What would you do if you saw someone being left out?”

It’s a fun, simple way to prep your child to be a confident upstander!

At Peds in Brevard, we’re not only here for your child’s physical health — we’re passionate about their emotional and social wellness, too. 💙

🌿 Wellness Wednesday: Empathy + Assertive Communication 🌿

Today’s reminder: true connection starts when we listen with empathy and speak with kindness & clarity.

When we practice empathy, we step into someone else’s shoes. We hear their joys, their worries, their truths — without judgement. It’s not about “fixing” them; it’s about being present.

Assertive communication lets us express our own needs, boundaries, and feelings in a way that’s honest yet respectful. It’s the bridge between “What I feel” and “What I need,” said in a tone that honors both sides.

Here are a few tips to bring both into your everyday:

Begin with “I feel…” statements (instead of “You are…”).
Use active listening: hear, reflect, validate.
Be clear about what you want or need — calmly, firmly, without guilt.
Pause before reacting — sometimes a breath gives wisdom.

At Peds in Brevard, we believe in supporting whole‑person health: body and mind. Empathy and assertive communication aren’t just “nice to have” — they’re tools for healthier relationships, reduced stress, and better emotional wellness. Here’s wishing you all a heart full of empathy and a voice that speaks your truth. 💙

🎉 Fun Fact Friday 🎉

Did you know? One 12-ounce can of soda can pack up to 10 teaspoons of sugar! 😱

That’s more than the recommended daily amount for kids — and those sugary drinks add up fast.

🥤 Sugary drinks sneak in through:

• Sodas

• Fruit punches

• Sports drinks

• Flavored waters

• Sweetened teas and coffees

But don’t worry — there are delicious and healthier alternatives! 💧✨

✅ Water with lemon or cucumber slices

✅ Sparkling water with a splash of 100% fruit juice

✅ Herbal iced teas (unsweetened)

✅ Milk or fortified plant-based options (watch added sugars)

✅ Smoothies made with fresh fruit and yogurt

Making a simple swap can protect your child’s health in a big way! 💪

🌿 Wellness Wednesday Tip 🌿

Preventing Childhood Obesity Starts at Home 💚

Childhood obesity is on the rise, but the good news is — small changes can make a big difference! As parents and caregivers, you play a key role in shaping healthy habits early on.

👣 Here are a few simple steps to help your child stay healthy and active:

✅ Encourage daily physical activity – Aim for at least 60 minutes of active play.

✅ Limit screen time – Try to keep it under 2 hours a day outside of schoolwork.

✅ Offer balanced meals and snacks – Prioritize fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins.

✅ Make water the go-to drink – Skip sugary beverages when possible.

✅ Lead by example – Kids are more likely to follow your healthy habits!

Every small step counts — and you’re not alone in this journey. 💪

🌴 Florida Pollen: Fun Facts That Might Make You Sneeze! 🤧

Did you know that Florida’s warm, sunny weather makes it a year-round paradise… for pollen too? 😅 Here are some fun (and sneezy) facts about native Florida pollen and the allergies they can cause:

🌼 Ragweed – One of the biggest allergy offenders in Florida during the fall. A single plant can release up to a billion grains of pollen into the air!
🌳 Oak Trees – These are everywhere in Florida, and they love to share their pollen—especially in early spring. Oak pollen is a major trigger for itchy eyes, runny noses, and sneezing fits.
🌾 Grass Pollen – Thanks to our long growing season, grasses like Bahia and Bermuda release pollen almost year-round. That means kids can have “seasonal allergies” even when it’s not officially allergy season elsewhere!
🍃 Mold Spores – Okay, not pollen… but mold loves Florida’s humidity and can trigger allergy symptoms just the same, especially after rain.

If your child struggles with constant sniffles, itchy eyes, or sneezing, it might not just be a cold—it could be Florida in bloom. 🌸

Is It Fall Allergies or Just a Cold? Here’s What Parents Should Know

As the weather cools down, many children start showing symptoms like runny noses, sneezing, or itchy eyes. But how do you know if it’s just a common cold—or if your child is dealing with fall allergies?

Here’s a quick way to tell:

👉 Colds usually come on gradually, last about a week, and can include mild fever, fatigue, and thick nasal discharge.

👉 Fall allergies, on the other hand, often start suddenly, especially after outdoor play. Allergies can linger for weeks and may include sneezing, itchy eyes, and clear, watery mucus—without fever.

One big clue? If your child seems to feel fine but can’t stop sneezing or rubbing their eyes, it may be allergies—not a virus.

🍁 Fall allergies are often triggered by things like ragweed pollen and mold, which are common this time of year.

If you’re unsure what’s going on or how to help your child feel better, your pediatrician can guide you. Check out www.pedsinbrevard.com for helpful resources and local support.

👩‍⚕️ Because every child deserves to breathe easy—especially in the fall!

Vaccines are Vital

Dear Parents,
Recently, Governor DeSantis has indicated his intention to try to eliminate vaccine mandates for children in Florida public schools. Pediatrics in Brevard strongly believes in the importance of vaccines to protect children from harmful infections and create a safe school environment for all children. We do not support attempts to roll back this very important public health policy because it would result in more hospitalizations and deaths of Florida children due to preventable diseases. We have no plans to change our vaccine policy at this time and will continue to educate parents and families on the need for public health measures such as immunization to protect every member of our community. The required school vaccinations have long been studied and shown to be safe and effective. We also believe that there are times when the public good should be prioritized over individual preference. Without this fundamental principle, humans would not be able to live peacefully in communities or societies. While there are exemptions and options for those who cannot or will not accept vaccines, public health policies and mandates are needed to ensure the safety of everyone, especially our most vulnerable community members.
Live Well,
Pediatrics in Brevard
