Buddha’s Halo or Brocken specter, Kalahaku Overlook
When conditions are right, your shadow may be surrounded by a halo as the sun shines onto the sea of clouds. As we drove up to the Healeakala on the last day in the afternoon, the road was encased by fog, only to be broken by a bright cloudless sunny sky as we approached the summit. From the upper visitor’s center at 9740ft, you can see the clouds streaming to cover the craters. I recognized the condition from looking at many photos of Buddha’s Halo and raced to Kalahaku Overlook hoping to see it! 🤞

“Early birds…”
Nope… despite hitting the Hosmer Grove Trail at 7am (only because the ranger was kind enough to let us in without a “sunrise reservation” which we technically needed to enter Healeakala National Park from 3-7am, even though the sun already rose), we did not see any native Hawaiian honey creepers. A Japanese White Eye posed for photos on a mamane bush. Notice there are no yellow blossoms on the bush, only seeds? Could be the reason why the Hawaiian nectar feeders are feeding somewhere else inside the park.🤔

What a difference 24hrs makes…
Returning to Healeakala Summit at 10,000ft elevation to clearer skies but no less windy or freezing cold! Headlamps from cars leaving the summit intermittently lights up Magnetic Hill (mesa like structure in the foreground) while “light pollution“ on the Big Island clearly shows Mauna Kea on the distant left and Mauna Loa on the distant right.

Clouds at the summit?
Usually clouds sit below Healeakala’s 10,000ft summit…except when they don’t… The 2 small bumps in the distance is Mauna Kea (left) and Mauna Loa (right) on the Big Island across a 30mile wide channel.

Qi for Health

Qigong is the ancient Chinese “practice of Qi”. We share techniques from medical Qigong (Chilel/ Zhening) to enhance the natural exchange of Qi between humans & the universe. Regular qigong practice may strengthen the body, relax the mind, promote creativity, and improve quality of life. It is a good complement to Western Medicine.
