Mirror, mirror-2…
the huge reflective surface of the Salar de Uyuni can be vey disorienting. The brain seems to have trouble processing so much reflection. The amount of water on the salt surface varies from location to location. The cars drive very slowly to minimize splashing corrosive salt water onto under carriage. Distances are very deceiving… land seems to come no closer despite traveling right towards it.

Notice there are no road signs showing the way to get on the Salar. (The cactus marks the spot.) Also there are no roads at all or any way to know Where to go on the Salar.

The most expensive fiber in the world comes from vicuña. Vicuña yarn sell for $300/ ounce! They can’t be domesticated. Only 1 company is authorized to round them up for shearing each year. So, to see them strolling the Altiplano in Chile and Bolivia makes me wonder how many thousands of dollars just walked by! And no, you can’t just grab one and shear their fleece. It will be difficult to smuggle the fleece through the border since ALL luggage is opened & inspected departing Bolivia and entering Chile!😆

Sunrise shoot behind the hotel…
Sunrise was a bit frosty at Laguna Hedionda behind the hotel but the reflection of snow capped mountains were worth it. There were also baby gray flamingos that have not acquired the red/ pink color of the adults.

Just a quick stop to see Arbol de Piedra in Siloli Desert and a quick shot. Wish we had more time to shoot in the desert at night but this area is out in the middle of nowhere in Bolivia at around 14,500ft elevation! Formations are caused by wind erosion.

Laguna Colorada

Infrastructure is rustic in Bolivia. Can you see the tiny cars in the dirt tracks? Just across the border is the pointed Licancabur Volcano, the flatter topped Jurique volcano, and Laguna Blanca.
