In mental health, we’ve been seeing a recent influx in the presence of Pop Psychology. Social media influencers and creators love to highlight mental health related topics for clicks and shares. To an extent, this is great! It allows people to be introspective of their own experiences, connect to content that could help them with growth, and increase their understanding of themselves and others. Enjoy the content and takeaways (I know I do)! But remember…
Before you formally diagnose yourself with anything, or try to treat your emotional injuries through tips and strategies you see online; seek out the support of a mental health professional. We are here to create lasting change that takes into account science and empirical evidence.
•Pop Psychology: This includes catchy phrases, self-help tips, motivational quotes, and oversimplified theories that circulate in social media and other forms of entertainment. While these ideas are accessible and relatable, they may lack depth, context and scientific grounding.
For example, expressions like "choose your hard" or "good vibes only" may resonate or inspire, but don't encompass the vast complexities of psychological wellness.
•Actual Psychology: This is the larger, more complex structure of true psychology. It's supported by years of empirical research, carefully controlled experimentation, peer-reviewed studies, and legal/ethical guidelines. This is where mental health professionals work, addressing nuanced topics like cognitive distortions, therapy models and proper application, neurobiological factors, and the multifaceted nature of human behavior. It's less flashy, but far more dynamic and reliable.
