Tick Repellant: There are many different bug/tick repellents on the market. Many repellents contain harsh chemicals such as permethrin or DEET.

❌DEET has some concerns which include risk of neurological symptoms and CDC recommends lower concentrations for use on children.
🌿There are many natural repellents out there, but none have the same efficacy as Lemon-eucalyptus essential oil (derived from Eucalyptus citriodora plant).

✅This oil is registered with the EPA and is recommended by the CDC for use for repelling ticks. Lemon-eucalyptus essential oil is safe for ages 3+ and can be purchased at our office in Rockport.

April Showers Bring May…Ticks?

Have you been noticing more ticks? I sure have! I don’t think the ticks have arrived just because it's Lyme Disease Awareness Month.

As the temperatures warm up the deer ticks (and other creatures) make their way out into the world. Those deer ticks love to feast on humans. Approximately 400,000 new cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed each year. Many cases also go undiagnosed because the symptoms of Lyme disease are varied and can affect many different systems of the body, such as the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and musculoskeletal system.

🧫Did you know? Deer ticks can carry many different diseases that can be transmitted to humans, not just Lyme Disease. Some other diseases include Bartonella, Babesia, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichia.

🩸Have I been bitten? Deer Ticks can be so small they are hard to spot, like the size of a tiny freckle or 2mm. Even these teeny-tiny ones can carry diseases and you may never know you had a tick bite.

🎯No Rash? Up to 30% of Lyme disease cases will never develop a rash.

🦵No Joint Pain? Many cases of Lyme disease include joint pain, but many do not. This is because the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, can infect other parts of your body such as your heart, nerves, brain, and muscles.1

⁉️Concerned you have a tick-borne disease? I recommended seeing a naturopathic doctor or healthcare provider for evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water. Water has had a long history of use in medicine over thousands of years.

💧Hydrotherapy harnesses the healing power of water to create balance and support health in the body. There are many different types of treatments options and the most common one used by naturopathic doctors for hundreds of years is constitutional hydrotherapy.

💦Constitutional Hydrotherapy consists of a specific application of alternating hot and cold water to the chest, abdomen and back, while being wrapped in a wool blanket.

💦This special application of water alters the blood and lymph flow in the body, which increases circulation and detoxification pathways, as well as modulate immune system and digestive system functioning. Additionally, this treatment stimulates the parasympathic nervous system—aka “rest and digest”, which allows for stress reduction.

💧Atlas Naturopathic Health Center currently offers constitutional to established patients and to patients with a referral.

What’s Clean about these 15 foods?

They all have very low or no pesticides on them! That means you don’t need to spend money buying these foods as organic, especially if you’re on a budget.

🥑 I recommend buying organic foods as much as you can, but sometimes it isn’t possible either because they are available as organic or the price point is too high. Knowing which produce are safe to buy conventionally grown and which you should buy organic helps make shopping easier. Who doesn’t like easy?

🌱Who determines this this? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that annually tests the top 46 most popular fruits & veggies for pesticides. They also are a great resource to see if other products you use in your home are safe. Check out their website for more information: www.ewg.org.

🩺I am accepting new patients at Atlas Naturopathic Health Center. I offer complimentary 15-minute phone consults to see if naturopathic medicine is the right fit for your needs.

I typically recommend eating organic foods as much as possible. However, if you’re on a budget buying organic can be overwhelming. At a minimum I recommend buying organic for the foods listed on the Dirty Dozen: top 12 foods contaminated with pesticides.

🌱 Why should you care? Consumption of pesticides has profound health effects especially long-term exposure. You may not be able to completely eliminate pesticides in your life, but there is a lot that you can do to lower the toxic burden, such as buying organic when possible, especially foods on the dirty dozen list!

🌱 Who determines the list? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that annually tests the top 46 most popular fruits & veggies for pesticides. They also are a great resource to see if other products you use in your home are safe. Check out their website for more information: www.ewg.org.
