We cannot believe summer is almost over! As the summer fun wraps up and as school begins, here are some considerations for helping your neurodivergent kiddos transition back to school.
π Plan ahead for big transitions. Begin having the back-to-school conversation early! Some kids may be excited, while others may feel anxiety or dread. You know your child best, so striking a balance of preparing them for the transition while also allowing them to enjoy the remainder of their break is going to be important.
π If your child struggles with transitions, start by slowly moving their routines back to their school schedule. Gradually adjusting their mealtimes, bedtimes, and hygiene routines a few weeks before can help ease the transition into a different schedule.
π Make back-to-school shopping fun! Help your child prepare for the year by incorporating color-coded notebooks and folders to promote organization, and helping them make their school materials fun. Add sensory tools to their backpacks or lunchboxes (e.g., pop-it keychains) if your child has sensory needs!
π If your child is transitioning to a new school, such as from a move or because they are advancing in grade level (e.g., middle to high school), visiting the school or chatting with a friend or neighbor in that school can help prepare for what to expect.
π Ask for a meeting with the special education department, if appliable, to set up a Section 504 Plan or IEP to meet you child's learning needs.
Each child may have their own unique back-to-school needs. Please share your back-to-school tips in the comments below!
