Given that independent physicians are reimbursed 60% less than hospital based counterparts, it's easy to understand why so many chose to leave independent practice- but now even the hospital systems are feeling the pain of a broken healthcare system.
Healthcare tied to for profit based insurance companies is leading the collapse of medical care in both Maine & the US. Hospitals need much leaner administrative structures to survive. Anyone in private practice will acknowledge this.
Sadly we are coming close to a time when most privately practicing physicians will no longer be able to accept insurance as stagnant reimbursements & obscene claim denials prevent responsible fiscal management.
We must do more to curb the insurance choke hold that is collapsing modern healthcare.
The state's major hospitals rank near the bottom among 50 states in 3 metrics β operating margin, debt burden and age of facilities β according to an analysis done for the Maine Hospital Association.
