"It's hot outside." and "It's hot outside?" have different meanings, but how can we tell?

🌈INTONATION🌈

Intonation is the use of pitch in communication to alter the meaning of an utterance.

⁉ In English, we tend to use a falling pitch for statements, like the first sentence, and a rising pitch for questions, like the second sentence.

🚸 Children pick up on these differences and gradually learn how to use intonation themselves.

🚼 Variation in intonation typically occurs at the same time babbling becomes more complex (between 6 months- 1 year.)

The big takeaway? You are modeling much more than WHAT to say every time you talk in front of your child! 💬

Early reading is all about learning what reading IS. Letting your child lead the process makes the experience enjoyable and motivating!

So if your child wants to close the book, flip to the next page, skip pages, etc., let them! It will pay off in the long run 📖
