As a professor of a course that studies the relationship between the mind and the body at Pace University, I discovered a substantial amount of research that concluded that exercise and massage therapy are often more effective at treating a variety of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychological stress than psychotropic medication is.
While working in the mental health field as a therapist, I witnessed firsthand that our medical system is quick to prescribe psych meds as a first resort when natural psychophysical interventions like exercise and massage therapy are usually not utilized in treatment despite having been found to often be more effective than medication in treating many of these conditions. As a result, I became a strong believer in the mission of facilitating access to the psychotherapeutic benefits of these interventions to people of all income levels without cost being a barrier to treatment and started our practice that focuses on using these interventions to improve the mental health outcomes of our clients with the full cost of services being covered by their health insurance plans. Kokoro is the Japanese word for the harmonious relationship between mind, body, heart, and spirit which is a concept that runs contrary to the approach of traditional Western medicine of treating the mind and body as two separate entities.
Since we’ve opened, I’ve had a lot of clients who have told me that they’ve found that psych medication didn’t work well for them but that they’ve realized that regular exercise has worked better for them in managing their mental health conditions over the years and that they’re happy and excited that someone else has recognized this fact and is starting to move the mental health field in this direction. Come visit us at our location in Rockville Centre, NY and see what regular exercise and massage therapy can do for improving your psychological wellbeing.
