In Japan, most companies have a company mascot known as a “yuru-chara” that symbolizes what the company does and usually looks like a cartoon character. One of my favorite Japanese mascots growing up was from a suspension company named Tein who had a mascot of a cartoon character that looked like a suspension damper known as “Dampachi.” I used to put decals of Dampachi on my car that had Tein coilover suspension.

We’re looking for our own company mascot for Kokoro that symbolizes the mind and body connection and that ideally has a basis in Japanese symbols and culture. We’re holding a contest to see who can come up with the best mascot and would like interested contestants to send us their ideas and/or drawings for a cartoon character mascot. The winner of the contest will get a pair of Kokoro edition Nike Metcon 9s and a $500 Visa gift card. Feel free to message us with your ideas and drawings and we will announce the winning idea at the end of the contest.

As a professor of a course that studies the relationship between the mind and the body at Pace University, I discovered a substantial amount of research that concluded that exercise and massage therapy are often more effective at treating a variety of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychological stress than psychotropic medication is.

While working in the mental health field as a therapist, I witnessed firsthand that our medical system is quick to prescribe psych meds as a first resort when natural psychophysical interventions like exercise and massage therapy are usually not utilized in treatment despite having been found to often be more effective than medication in treating many of these conditions. As a result, I became a strong believer in the mission of facilitating access to the psychotherapeutic benefits of these interventions to people of all income levels without cost being a barrier to treatment and started our practice that focuses on using these interventions to improve the mental health outcomes of our clients with the full cost of services being covered by their health insurance plans. Kokoro is the Japanese word for the harmonious relationship between mind, body, heart, and spirit which is a concept that runs contrary to the approach of traditional Western medicine of treating the mind and body as two separate entities.

Since we’ve opened, I’ve had a lot of clients who have told me that they’ve found that psych medication didn’t work well for them but that they’ve realized that regular exercise has worked better for them in managing their mental health conditions over the years and that they’re happy and excited that someone else has recognized this fact and is starting to move the mental health field in this direction. Come visit us at our location in Rockville Centre, NY and see what regular exercise and massage therapy can do for improving your psychological wellbeing.

They say deadlifts are the king of exercises and squats are the queen of exercises due to the amount of muscle groups that are used at once during those movements. Compound lifting movements like these serve as the foundation of an effective weight training routine and should be thought of as the meat and potatoes of the workout while isolation movements like bicep curls that only use one or two muscle groups during the movement should be thought of as the dessert of the workout.
