STOP FEELING GUILTY!
Next time you feel guilty, stop. Tell yourself that you have done something you don't like. You will learn from this. Next time not do the same thing again. Thank your conscience. Reward yourself for taking responsibility. Let go of the guilt.

What effect does my past have on me?

The past is very important to what we are at this moment because it brought us to this place and time. Everything we have done everything that has happened to us, all our collective experiences have resulted in exactly who and what we now are.
If you are spending a significant amount of time living in your past, and you will know so by feeling guilty, by making "what if" and "if only" statements, then your are allowing the past to steal your time and your life.
Your Past is over, untouchable, unchangeable. The best way to get out of your past is to let go and remember the lesson by honoring it. Stop hating, regretting, fighting, wishing for, and denying. Accept the reality of what you had and what you missed.
Decide to use your past for your optimum benefit. You do not need to spend your present and your future dealing with your past.

Buddhist teaching that all of life is in a constant state of change. everything has a beginning and everything has an end. Every tree begins with a seed and will eventually transform back into earth. Every rock is formed and every rock will vanish. In our modern world, this means that every car, every machine, every piece of closthing is created and all will wear out and crumble; it's only a matter of when. Our bodies are born and they will die. A glass is created and will eventually break.
There is peace to be found in this teaching. When you expect something to break, you're not surprised or disappointed when it does. Instead of becoming immobilized when something is destroyed, you feel grateful for the time you have had.

Imagine that everyone you meet are all here to teach you something. Perhaps the obnoxious driver or disrespectful teenager is here to teach you about patience, the punk rocker might be here to teach you to be less judgmental. Your job is to try to determine what the people in your life are trying to teach you. You'll find that if you do this, you'll be far less annoyed, bothered, and frustrated by the actions and imperfections of other people.

Criticizing other people rarely promotes cooperation and trust, but the real problem concerns the inner speech of everyday consciousness, because that is where the voices of self-criticism reside. The more self-critical you are, the more likely you'll become immersed in feelings of insecurity.
