New research published in examines whether a hormone called asprosin may help predict weight and body composition changes after menopause.

Led by investigators at the University of California, Irvine Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health and using data from the Women’s Health Initiative, the study followed more than 4,000 postmenopausal women for three years.

Among women without obesity or diabetes, higher baseline asprosin levels were associated with less weight gain and differences in muscle and fat mass, reinforcing that body composition matters, not just the number on the scale.

The 2026 theme, Water and Gender, recognizes that women and girls are disproportionately affected by water-related challenges and calls for a rights-based approach where women have equal voice, leadership, and opportunities in water decision-making.

Research published in the ASN’s journal Current Developments in Nutrition and featured in Elsevier’s Sustainable Development Goals collection examines water insecurity in an indigenous community in the northern province of Formosa, Argentina.

The study found that many households struggle to get enough safe water. Limited infrastructure and unreliable deliveries often force families to rely on rainwater or other unsafe sources.

Women frequently shoulder the responsibility for securing water for their families. Their experiences highlight the connection between water access, gender roles, and health.
