Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site,

This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

*Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp .asp>

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Veterinarians have warned that cacao shells contain the same ingredient that makes chocolate toxic to dogs.

Dear all, I have read and heard multiple horror stories lately regarding flea treatment including over the counter drops that will poison cats. It in every thing that kills bugs. Even Deep Woods Off. Anything with a repellant that starts with the name Polly or Polli is toxic...Not sure why this stuff remains on shelves ?

Oh dear, oh dear! The saddest thing of all happened to me as my beloved owner passed away. So, here I am in a strange place and really worried about finding a loving new home. I'm told that I'm a calico cutie and that my sweet disposition makes me a great candidate for a forever home. But, in these…

What Not To Feed Your Dogs Around The Holidays
Published: 11/13/2016

While feeding your dog human foods like cooked meats, veggies such as carrots and cucumbers, and cooked rice is acceptable, there are certain foods no dog should eat. If you have people staying with you, make sure they know about this list!
Each of these can have harmful effects on a dog’s health, ranging from allergic reactions to vomiting, diarrhea or even death. Be on the safe side and restrict your dog’s access to these foods – he or she will thank you!
1. Alcohol, including beer, wine and liquor
2. Avocados
3. Caffeine, such as tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate and colas
4. Dairy products
5. Grapes and raisins
6. Macadamia nuts or foods containing macadamia nuts
7. Meat fat or bones
8. Onions and garlic – raw, cooked, dehydrated or powdered
9. Pantry staples such as baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg
10. Fruits with pits, such as peaches and plums
11. Raw eggs, meat and fish
12. Salty or sugary food and drinks
Also be aware of anything containing the sweetener xylitol, such as candy, gum, toothpaste and baked goods, as well as human medications, especially acetaminophen and ibuprofen – all can have serious adverse effects on your dog’s health.
If your dog does eat any of the above, call your vet, an emergency clinic (keep their numbers in a prominent place) or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435).
