Happy Occupational Therapy Month! What do occupational therapists do?

Occupational therapists (OT) help individuals of all ages participate in occupations - or the things you want and need to do throughout the day. When an injury, disease, or disability makes engaging in occupations difficult, OTs help to increase skills, adapt the task, and/or alter the environment to enable individuals to complete their occupations.

Check out the information below to learn about the categories of occupations!

Baby's first steps are an exciting milestone, but crawling is a very important precursor! Crawling helps to develop strength, balance, coordination, the sensory systems, and more. The skills your baby develops while crawling will continue to be used in higher level gross motor and fine motor skills like walking, feeding themselves, and even riding a bike!

Core strength is more than just abs! It involves the belly, back, hips, and pelvis stabilizing and controlling our spine and pelvis. A strong core is foundational to our strength, balance, and coordination.

If you notice your child slouching, leaning, or using their arms or furniture for support, they may be struggling with a weak core. Core weakness can also cause clumsiness, poor endurance during physical activity, difficulties climbing on playground equipment, trouble sitting still for long periods of time, or struggles with fine motor skills like writing and using eating utensils.

If you think this may apply to your child, try out some of these activities or consider having them evaluated by a physical therapist or occupational therapist!
