🌞 Essential Tips For Keeping Your Seniors Safe in This Heat🌞
Older adults face increased risks from heat-related illnesses when temperatures rise, as there are in the DMV.
To help keep them safe and comfortable:
💧 Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Encourage seniors to drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if they don’t feel thirsty—to prevent dehydration, which can cause dizziness, confusion, and falls. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they can dehydrate further.
❄️ Create a Cool Environment
Close the curtains or blinds during peak hours to reduce stress on your air conditioning. If you find yourself without air conditioning, visit community cooling centers, libraries, or senior centers to keep cool. Fans alone are not enough during this extreme heat.
🍳 Avoid Adding Heat Indoors
Limit the use of ovens and stoves to keep indoor temperatures down.
🚿 Use Cooling Techniques
Apply damp cloths, take a shower, or run cool water on your skin to lower body temps safely.
🕶️ Limit Sun Exposure and Outdoor Activities
Avoid going outside during midday heat. If you must be out, wear lightweight, loose, light-colored clothing, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
👥 Check In Regularly
Please check on your seniors - family, friends, neighbors. They may not recognize or communicate heat distress, especially those with dementia or chronic illnesses. Frequent check-ins can be lifesaving.
