My name is Dr.Wesley Wang, PT, DPT. I am a physical therapist with experience treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions. My focus is on sports rehabilitation, specializing in ACL recovery. My treatment philosophies centers around strengthening, movement and patient education. I strive to empower my patients to give them the tools necessary to get back to their respective activities. I currently work at Healthy Baller, an athletic training facility which offers physical therapy, located in Rockville, MD. Our facility offers a private physical therapy office, a 50 yard turf field and extensive weight room, allowing me to challenge my athletes to ensure they are ready to return to their respective sports. ๐Ÿ™‹The labrum is a ring of cartilage that goes around the femoral acetabulum (socket of the hip). It deepens the socket to improve the stability of the hip.

๐Ÿค• The hip labrum can become torn through an injury such as a fall or collision with another person.

๐Ÿค”Additionally, some peoples anatomy makes them more susceptible to labrum tears. Depending on the location of the tear, it potentially can present as groin pain.

๐Ÿ’ชHere are some exercises we did in the to attempt to manage a labrum injury non operative. Youโ€™ll notice we are doing a variety of exercises all targeting the hip.

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธOne of the things that bothers me the most about the field is every facility marketing themselves as โ€œsports PTโ€ when they have no business treating high level athletes.

๐Ÿ˜ฉWhile this may rub people the wrong way, if a facility has limited weights, no objective testing, limited clinician knowledge on strength and conditioning, and no open space, they have no business treating athletes.

๐Ÿƒโ€โžก๏ธAthletes place a ton of stress on their bodies and their rehab must match the demands of their goals. Rehab SHOULD be challenging, require them to push themselves because ultimately, we are trying to get them back to their sport at 100%.

๐Ÿ˜ฑWho do you think pays the consequences for poor rehab? The athlete. I have heard countless stories of athletes not getting the care they need which leads to another injury and longer time on the sidelines.

๐Ÿ˜คAศ™ a field, we need to stop pretending that every PT is qualified to treat every injury.

๐ŸงIf youโ€™re an injured athlete and are stuck spending 80% of your session on the table and there are no other athletes around you, you probably need to find a new facility.

๐Ÿ—ฃStatistically speaking, approximately 20-25% of ACL patients will suffer a second ACL tear, and I fall under this statistic. There arenโ€™t enough questions being asked as to WHY this is happening.

๐ŸšจOne big issue Iโ€™ve heard and seen is athletes getting cleared at a specific month, typically ranging between 6-9 months.

๐Ÿ˜ฉI see a ton of ACLs and thereโ€™s no way to predict when an athlete will be ready. I do know that Iโ€™ll never clear anyone before 9 months MINIMUM.

๐Ÿ‘‰Just like driving, turning 16 doesnโ€™t guarantee you the privilege to drive, you must be tested. ACL return to sport testing is similar in that 9 months is the recommended minimum but testing is pivotal. Some important tests include:

1๏ธโƒฃ Strength testing
2๏ธโƒฃ Hop tests
3๏ธโƒฃ Psychological testing
4๏ธโƒฃ Time - 9 months MINIMUM

๐Ÿ”ฅTesting is 100% necessary before clearing someone, NO ONE should be guessing. If someone is clearing you without testing, find someone who will test you.
