Not sure how to help your child’s language development? Here are some tips you can use everyday!
🗣️ Get face to face - This helps your child focus on your facial expressions and how words are formed.
🗣️ Narrate their play - Describe their actions in the moment to connect words to experiences.
🗣️ Pause and wait - Give space after you speak. This shows you expect a response and encourages interaction.
🗣️ Follow their lead - Let your child guide the play and conversation. They’ll be more engaged and responsive.
🗣️ Add one word - Build their vocabulary naturally by making your sentence just one step ahead of theirs.
🗣️ Repeat - Kids need to hear words often to learn them. Don’t be afraid to sound like a broken record!
💕 Small tweaks make a big difference.

Due to excessive screen time & exposure to academic learning (alphabet, Number puzzles, rhymes), many children have a delay in learning functional words resulting in a difficulty to communicate with their parents or peers.
✨ How can you teach functional words?
👉 The most underrated way is to involve your child in functional everyday activities. Model & teach words during bathing, preparing a snack, at the grocery store, etc.

Communication isn’t just about talking. It’s about finding the ways each child best expresses themselves.
Here are just a few ways children communicate:
👉 Using spoken words
👉 Gestures, body language and hand leading
👉 Facial expressions
👉 Robust AAC devices
👉 Sign language
👉 Sounds, movements, or actions
When we honor all of these as communication, we send the message: Your voice matters, no matter how you share it.

Try using a mirror when practicing new skills, speech sounds, and gestures.
🪞 A mirror is a great way to practice waving hi & bye, playing Peek-a-Boo, and making silly faces.
It’s fantastic because your child can see what YOU are doing AND what THEY are doing which helps with imitation.

The little breakthroughs? They’re EVERYTHING! 🙌
In speech therapy, that “small” step might be a child finally initiating a greeting, trying out a new AAC button, or correctly producing a tricky sound they’ve been working on for weeks. 🎉
As SLPs, we know these tiny moments are anything but small. They’re signs of courage, growth, and connection-and they deserve to be celebrated.

Early shared reading gives children:
📕 Richer vocabulary
📕Stronger grammar and sentence structure
📕Improved school readiness
📕Deeper understanding of words (especially when adults point, label, and explain)
⭐️ SLP PRO TIP: Talk about the pictures, ask questions, and repeat new words. Also, sometimes reading the same book several times a week is best. This will provide repetition & strengthen a child’s memory of newly learned vocabulary.

07/31/2025

Children often repeat words and phrases said by others as they learn how to speak. The main difference between echolalia and a child just repeating words lies in the purpose and the context.
🗣️ Echolalia is typically an automatic repetition of what is said by someone else. It lacks purpose or intent to communicate or engage. 💬 Echolalia can be a normal phase in language development.
💡 However, if a child is still showing signs of echolalia by age 3 or 4, you should have them evaluated by a speech pathologist.
👉 Speech therapy can help by addressing the underlying cause of echolalia and can equip your child with the tools and strategies to reduce and sometimes even overcome the effects.
