Hypertensive disorders like preeclampsia—marked by high blood pressure during pregnancy—disproportionately affect Black women in the U.S. If left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to serious complications or even death for both mother and baby.
What can we do?
• Patients should learn the risks, signs, and symptoms of common pregnancy conditions. Trusted resources like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists - ACOG and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine offer reliable, easy-to-understand information.
• Healthcare providers should ensure that they are educated about the nuances of pregnancy-related conditions and how those conditions may present in the populations for which they are providing care. They should educate patients about their individual risks and options for risk reduction, and how to recognize early signs and symptoms of dangerous pregnancy-related conditions.
Maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are declining—but not for Black women. Women’s Health Specialists started of as a practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Moises Steren, M.D. in the 1970s. The practice originally was located in Montgomery Village.
Dr. Moises Steren eventually relocated the practice to Rockville off of Old Georgetown Road and Tilden Road and had a few different associates throughout the years. Dr. Moises Steren was instrumental in the OB/GYN departments at both Shady Grove (now Adventist Hospital) and Suburban hospitals, serving as department chairs at hospitals.
In 1987, Dr. Moises Steren decided to stop Obstetrics and focus on his gynecology practice.
In the summer of 1994, Drs. Albert Steren and Diane Snyder joined the practice. Dr. Albert Steren finished his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology and began the Oncology side of the practice. Dr. Snyder restarted the Obstetric side of the practice. At that time, there were two practice locations, one next to Shady Grove Hospital and the other one in Bethesda. This was before electronic health records and we had a courier service go between the offices a few times per day!
WHS decided to stop providing Obstetrical services in the summer of 2002 and consolidated offices to our present day Rockville location. WHS opened another location in Germantown office in April 2014.
Alisa Studley, PA joined the practice in June 1996. Certified Nurse Midwife, Nadine Flaharty, joined the practice in November 2001. Our second Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. James Barter joined us in February 2003. Dr. Amy Levav joined in September 2005 and Dr. Candice Jones-Cox and Nadine Thompson, PA joined in September 2017.
