Pain vs. Soreness: Know the Difference

Not all discomfort is the same—and knowing the difference can keep you healthy and progressing.

Soreness

Feels like stiffness or tenderness, usually 12–48 hours after activity

Often called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)

Improves as you warm up or move

A normal sign your muscles are adapting

Pain

Sharp, stabbing, or burning

Can show up suddenly or worsen during activity

Doesn’t ease with movement (or gets worse)

Your body’s warning signal

Why it matters
Pushing through soreness can be okay with proper rest and recovery. Pushing through pain can lead to injury and setbacks.

Listen to your body
Rest when needed, hydrate, warm up, cool down, and don’t be afraid to take a day off. Progress comes from consistency—not ignoring signals.
