5 things guaranteed to happen somewhere this Thanksgiving:

1. Grandpa will fall asleep in front of the TV before dinner.
2. Mom will overcook one of her famous dishes and be convinced she's ruined Thanksgiving.
3. Brothers and sisters will argue over who was the favorite growing up.
4. Regardless of who is best equipped to carve the turkey, someone else will tell them how to do it.
5. Everyone will eat way too much, but still somehow find room for pie.

Thanksgiving's just like that. What's something guaranteed to happen at YOUR family Thanksgiving? Share with us in the comments.

"We brought him back to life before the paramedics showed up," said Shearer, of Irwin.
Pittsburgh EMS whisked Mahoney away to UPMC Presbyterian, where doctors placed stents in his heart within 45 minutes. Mahoney doesn't remember anything after arriving at the exhibit and chatting with a security guard until he awoke the next day. Blame it on the "widow maker," a heart attack caused by an arterial blockage that can be fatal in minutes.

Don't be concerned whether you donate blood daily. Contrary to popular belief, blood donation is not linked to an increased risk of death or cancer. You will be saving many lives by giving blood.

Someone in the United States requires a blood transfusion every two seconds, and a single donor will save up to three lives. Furthermore, donating blood several times a year is safe, and institutions use sterile equipment for each donor to reduce the risk of infection.

That said, not everyone can become a blood donor. Certain medical conditions, such as dementia or HIV infection, can make you unable to donate blood.

Teach kids that a 911 emergency is when someone needs help right away because of an injury or an immediate danger. Kids may feel scared or nervous if they have to call 911. Tell them that the emergency operators who answer the phone talk to a lot of kids who are nervous or worried when they call. Make sure your kids know that even though they shouldn't give personal information to strangers, it's OK to trust the 911 operator.

One of our Frequently Asked Questions:

🤔 "What's the difference between an EMT and Paramedic?" 🤔

Texas has five levels of certification. The highest is Licensed Paramedic, followed by EMT-Paramedic, EMT-Intermediate, EMT-Basic and Emergency Care Attendant (ECA).

EMS degree programs are available, though many courses are offered through technical programs and others are approved through programs outside college settings. In Texas, EMS training programs are approved and monitored by staff in field offices located throughout the state.

A typical EMT-Basic course includes about 200 hours of training concentrating of basic life support, while an EMT-Paramedic course typically involves 1800 - 2000 hours of training, including advanced life support and critical care.

If you or someone you know is busy with holiday tasks, it's likely that the increase in activity could mean an increase in the likelihood of some minor injuries around the house.

Here's a helpful re-fresh on the topic of "Treating Cuts and Scrapes."

🚨When someone is bleeding, you want to prevent as much blood from leaving their body as possible. Try and find a clean cloth or bandage.

Then:

👉Apply gentle pressure for 20 to 30 minutes.

👉Clean the wound by gently running clean water over it. Avoid using soap on an open wound.

👉Apply antibiotic to the wound, like Neosporin.

👉Cover the wound with a bandage.

🚨If someone has a nosebleed, have the person lean forward. Press a cloth against the nostrils until the blood flow stops.

🚨The body is usually very quick at patching up small cuts and scrapes. But deeper wounds may require medical attention. With deep wounds:

👉Apply pressure.

👉Don’t apply ointments. Cover the area with loose cloth to prevent contaminants from infecting the wound.

👉Seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Do's and Don'ts While Waiting for an Ambulance

🔵 Make sure stay calm, tell the 911 operator where you are, and stay online to follow
his or her instructions.
