I hope this message finds you all safe and well. In these unprecedented and scary times in which we are now living we wanted to give our clients a little food for thought. The whole world seemed to change overnight, the safety and well being of our family and friends, financial securities have been challenged and many including ourselves are unsure when we will be able to return to work. This is a stressful time and stress can have profoundly negative impacts on our health. Specifically worrisome now would be the negative impact on our immune systems.
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is a control system that regulates digestion, respiration, heart rate, urination, reflex actions (sneezing, coughing, swallowing and vomiting). Think internal organs. The ANS is involuntary while the Somatic Nervous System is under our conscious (voluntary) control. Under the umbrella of the ANS are two branches or states of being. The Parasympathetic(PSNS) and Sympathetic Nervous Systems(SNS).
When we are in a Parasympathetic state in our bodies we are living in a “rest and digest” state. When we are in a Sympathetic state we are living in “fight or flight” state. 75-90% of all doctor’s visits are due to stress induced illness, so the dangers of over activation of the SNS is real!
Physiological responses are stimulated when thriving in the Parasympathetic and inhibited while floundering in the Sympathetic.
So how does this affect me? If you are currently in a Sympathetic state due to the perceived or real threat of COVID-19, financial strain, being cooped up or just the change of routine then your ANS has stimulated the Sympathetic and called it to action. Mobilizing it to increase heart rate and respiration and blood pressure. Also impacted are sleep, mental awareness, anxiety, recovery and emotions. Our brain function can be increased by improving muscular system function. When muscular activity is normalized then our brain activity is normalized.
When monitoring brain function in athletes we have seen that treating muscles affected brain activity. Physical changes in the body can be measured in the brain. The brain is the control center for the body but with measured results we have seen that by improving muscular system function we can improve brain function and that is what controls if we are in a Sympathetic state or a Parasympathetic state.
Great, but what do I now do with this information you may be asking yourself?
Breath from your diaphgram, in through the nose, out through the mouth
Hot bath, get in relax and be mindfull of the sensations you are feeling.
Low grade Isometric exercise (think less is more), get out and walk in nature, enjoy some sun.
Turn off the news/internet, quit feeding the SNS response and know that this too shall pass.
If anyone has any questions we are happy to answer phone calls and emails until we get word that we can reopen the clinic. Thank you to all of our loyal customers! Stay strong, be well and we can’t wait to see you all!
