Good stuff! There are so many generous practitioners out there willing to share helpful information.

In virtually every traditional system of medicine including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kampo, Unani-tibb, Ayurveda, Tibetan medicine, etc., there are two important components that help separate it from a simple collection of folk remedies. The two foundations of traditional medical practice are a system of constitutional energetics (hot, cold, damp, dry, excess, deficient, etc.) and a method of classifying herbs as to their energetic effect on the body. In most systems the taste of the herb is the most effective and easiest way to accomplish this. This system also helps to prevent exacerbation of illness due to incorrect prescribing and is especially useful when used along with systems of practice such as western herbal medicine/Phytotherapy which do not have an energetic basis.

As a wrap-up to The Ten Tastes posts, here is a handy printable guide you can download or print out.

How is it other women have it so together in photos of them doing herbally things? There's often flowing hair (or really cool braids), flowing dresses, and perfectly styled arrangements of plant materials (i.e. mandalas).

For me, long, flowing things get tangled or stuck. Exposed skin gets bitten or scratched to shreds. I'm usually exhausted by the end of the day. There's no making it pretty!

So. Let's get real. Here I am after a typical day of foraging (respectfully gathered from abundant resources). That's sweat (not glistening), and I ripped my favorite work shirt. I can only imagine what I look like after hours of digging roots with a pitchfork in the fall! At least I'm not covered in burdock and dirt here...

Not complaining! This is actually when I'm the most happy and grounded!

I'd love to see your real pictures in the comments!

Believe it or not, there's a turkey carcass and lots more veggies under there! Bone broth with lots of herbs, dried wild mushrooms, and a big splash of fire cider heading for the woodstove... Eat your medicine! 🌿🍃🌱

I'm taking an online course, "Digital Storytelling for Educators." I've really resisted going this route. I enjoy working in person with small groups and individuals, and I'm not techy.

Part of my first assignment was to choose a topic and create an outline. My topic blew into my yard this morning--pine compound syrup coming up!

I'll have to smoosh that into a two to ten minute time frame--those who've attended my "Evergreens as Medicine" presentation are probably laughing right now! I've been known to talk (enthusiastically) for almost two hours (sorry!) on the benefits of pine, spruce, cedar, and fir!

We'll see how it goes...
