Last Friday we welcomed Brian Harris of Burks County, Pennsylvania. Brian traveled to our Meyersdale Public Library's Pennsylvania Room to make a closer connection to his Civil War ancestor, Francis May.

Born June 5, 1830, in Somerset County, Francis would lose his right arm below the elbow due to a gunshot wound received March 31, 1865, near Hatcher's Run, Virginia. The local soldier's arm was amputated in the field on the day of battle. Discharged from the Union Army on June 28, 1865, at Pittsburgh, Francis returned to Somerset County, where he passed away on the 24th of April, 1892. He was laid to rest near his Upper Turkeyfoot Township home, in Mt. Zion United Brethren Cemetery.

While at our library, Brian had the opportunity to view the application Francis himself signed in 1884 to become a member of Ursina's Ross Rush Post 361, Grand Army of the Republic, chapter. The Ross Rush Post 361 GAR Collection is on permanent loan to our library courtesy Mt. Union Church Camp #502, Sons of Union Veterans, and its Auxiliary. Displayed on Brian's phone is an image of Francis.

Thank you for visiting, Brian! We are happy we could help you dig deeper into your family's roots.
