J. P. Smith

J.P. Smith, a crane operator and life-long beloved member of Rockwood, went home to be with the Lord on February 18th at the remarkable age of 94.

J.P. is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Gladys Smith (Nelson); his children, Johnny Smith (Nancy) and Ann Baker (David); brothers, Preston Smith and Fritz Smith (Nan); granddaughter, Dr. Madison Baker; his beloved dog Bristol; nephew, Mike Smith; Lydia Vazquez along with her children; and several deeply loved nieces and nephews.

J.P. is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lela Smith; sister, Ernestine Smith.

J.P. was born in Centerville, Tennessee on October 19, 1931, to Oliver and Lela Smith. Their family moved to Rockwood in his early childhood where he grew up and spent 85 wonderful years. He was a star athlete of the Rockwood Tigers football team and began his career as a crane operator for the Roane Iron Company in his early adulthood. On his 20th birthday, he eloped with and married Gladys Nelson in Rossville, Georgia. They raised a beautiful family of 2 children (Johnny and Ann) at their Wilder Ave home. He attended First United Pentecostal Church under Pastor Phillip Page and was an active, beloved member of his neighborhood and community.

In his later years, J.P. was still incredibly independent and could be found meticulously mowing his yard or working with his tractor helping others mow their fields. He loved sitting on his front porch with Bristol and a Coca Cola enjoying the day. His days were filled by chatting with neighbors over the fence and waving at old friends as they drove by. He delighted in driving his Ford pickup truck around Rockwood and to his son’s machining shop to tell stories about the good ole days of Rockwood. He made daily visits to his daughter’s home for a family dinner to fulfill his favorite role as Papaw to his adored granddaughter. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke you knew he meant what he said and he said what he meant.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, church, and community.

2 Timothy 4:7+8

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Brandon Green

Brandon Green, age 36, went home to be with the Lord suddenly on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026. Brandon was a lot of amazing things, but being an amazing father and husband were first and foremost in his life. He loved Jenny and was always there to support her and their family. Together, they raised two beautiful girls, who were his life. Brandon was always there for his girls, whether it be at home as "Dad" or on the field as "coach". His time was prioritized around family, and you could tell that coaching them was one of the biggest joys of his life. He was not only amazing to them, but to the many girls he got to help coach along the way. What began as coaching in the city league basketball and softball quickly grew into the girl's competitive travel league in softball. He was one of the coaches and founders of the Thunderbats. He got to help raise and coach his girls alongside his childhood best friends and their own children. Together, the Thunderbats became his second family, and he loved all of them like they were his own.

Brandon's time as a coach was influenced by his lifetime of being an athlete. Growing up, he played everything, but football was by far his favorite. He was a proud RHS Alumni and supported their Alumni association in any way he could. Brandon was a part of some of the most special teams in RHS football and baseball history. After high school, he pursued a hobby of being a referee. He officiated countless games around East Tennessee over the last few years but always loved it when he got to be back at Tom Pemberton Stadium and Civitan Field. He loved it so much that he even helped put together and played in the Rockwood Alumni Football games. Although those games may not have turned out like he and the rest of the Tigers wanted, Brandon let anyone know that being able to put those pads on one more time was the most fun he ever had in his life.

Brandon and his family were members of First Baptist Church in Rockwood. Faith was the focus of their home and Brandon always lead by example. Christ lived within his heart and if you knew Brandon, whether as a lifelong friend or even if you had just run into him at the store, you could see Christ in his actions, words, and how he cared for people. We often describe so many people as being special, but Brandon REALLY was. Jenny often referred to him as her "yes man". He could never say "No" to anyone in need. He had given the shirt off his back to many people and would continue to. His heart was pure and made of gold. To know Brandon was to know one of the most amazing people to ever walk this Earth. His friendship and presence were a blessing to so many, and his memories will continue to serve as those for all who knew him.

Brandon also had many passions and hobbies. Being a UT Vols fan wasn't always easy, but he never hesitated to rep the orange and white. He was as passionate of a fan as you could meet. He was big into fitness and weightlifting. He was responsible for inspiring a whole generation younger than him to pursue a better version of themselves in the gym. His guidance and influence is still felt to this day amongst that family he helped create. When he had time, he would often take up golfing with is friends, although he wasn't as good at it as his competitive spirit wanted him to be, but he got to spend that time with his daughter at a young age and later to help reconnect and briefly be able to his lifelong friends who he loved live brothers.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Irene and Charles Ladd; paternal grandfather: Eddie Green

He leaves to cherish his memory:

Wife: Jenny Green

Daughters: Marleigh Johnson, Piper Green

Father and Stepmother: Eddie and Stephanie Green

Mother: Stephanie Ladd

Sister: Darian Green (Wes Summers) and his nephew: Evan Summers

Brother: Keenon Green

Grandparents: Patsy Green and Debbie Reagan

Stepfather: Dwayne Buckholtz and step siblings: Vince Buckholtz and Ashley Buckholtz, and nephew: Jacob Buckholtz

Mother and Father-in-law: Shelia and Toby Miles

Sister-in-law: Julie Venable

and several other extended family members and very special friends

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 16th, 2026, from 5:00 pm ET - 8:00 pm ET at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Evans Mortuary with Pastor Drew Stockton officiating.
