The COVID-19 Pandemic has dramatically changed all our lives. It has also changed the way we mourn. Traditionally support of family, friends, and neighbors created a social safety net that helped us come to terms with loss. This crisis has changed that.

There is a communal grief as work, health-care, education and the economy, all of the systems we depend on, destabilize.

These are uncertain times, to add the grief of a lost loved one compounds the situation greatly. How do we grieve together when it is not safe to come together? Social media, video chat, tele-conferencing can help.

One thing we must keep in mind is the ongoing importance of social support. We must keep checking in on people, and keep the support going even after this period of social distancing and lockdown ends.

It may not be safe to come together to mourn, but we are all in this together. A daily phone call, Facebook message, or Facetime Call can have a major impact. It may seem like a small gesture, but it can mean the world to those mourning. Grief cannot be postponed to a later date. We must face it together, and support each other in any way we can.
