Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) is one of those poses that works on the body in a pretty deep, layered way.

Here’s why it’s considered beneficial:
*Calms the nervous system
This pose has a naturally “downshifting” effect. The forward fold encourages relaxation, which can possibly help reduce stress and overstimulation.

*Stretches the entire back line of the body
It targets your hamstrings, calves, lower back, and even the spine. If you sit a lot during the day, this can feel especially relieving.

*Digestion
The gentle compression of the abdomen can stimulate the digestive organs, which is why it’s often recommended for bloating or sluggish digestion (not a cure, but supportive).

*Encourages mindfulness and inward focus
Because it’s a closed, inward posture, it naturally pulls attention away from external stimulation and toward breath and sensation.

A couple important notes
*Don’t force the forward fold, always use props when needed
*If you have sciatica or disc issues definitely start with a modification or skipping depending on symptoms. I recommend trying the chair or supported version here.

Here are some suggestions of yoga poses to help you find some ease and release from tension or tightness in the hips and low back. These are great too if you’ve been sitting all day. I usually hold each one for a few minutes to get a deep stretch.

Makrasana (Crocodile Pose) offers many benefits for both the mind and body.

It helps release physical tension, relax the spine, shoulders, and neck, and reduce overall fatigue and muscular tightness.

Since your chest and belly is on the floor it really allows you to connect to the breath.

This supportive pose encourages the body to slow down and reset. Resting the front of the body against the floor can create a sense of calm, feeling of support and ground scattered energy.

While this pose may look simple, sometimes the quieter, more supportive poses can be the most powerful for both the mind and body.

Did you know.. Bird sounds can

*Signal safety and calm to the nervous system
*Create a sense of being outdoors and grounded
*Reduce mental overstimulation
*Help with relaxation, focus, meditation, or sleep
