Earlier this evening, shots were fired outside of Johnson County Mental Health Center's Olathe office at 1125 W. Spruce St. The office was closed at the time, and there were no injuries. We are grateful to the Johnson County, KS Sheriff's Office and Olathe Police Department for their quick response to keep our staff safe.

Our Olathe office (and Olathe's Genoa Pharmacy) will be closed tomorrow, Nov. 8. Staff will contact clients whose appointments are impacted.

All other JCMHC offices (and Shawnee's Genoa Pharmacy) will be open.

"I'm Thomas, and I am 26 years old. I was diagnosed with autism when I was 5. Currently, I work as a kitchen porter at Somerford Arms. When I was officially diagnosed with ASD back in 2004, doctors told my Mum and Dad I would never speak, be independent, live with a girlfriend, or drive a car. I had sensory, emotional, and behavioral issues, anxiety, and meltdowns. I still cannot tie shoe laces, so I have Easy Laces on my favorite trainers.

I proved the doctors, pediatricians, and child psychiatrists wrong. Many of my skills have significantly improved, and challenges have been overcome throughout the years.

The best things in life with autism come from supporting and loving my family, doing the things I love, enjoying working life while adapting to change and being a lot more flexible with my own routine. I am a fiercely independent young man with a strong will to work, and I also enjoy football, video games, and music.
I have several issues that stay with me for life, as well as anxiety, but these don't stop me from being who I am. Autism is something I am proud of. I celebrate this day with those who have autism, regardless of how mild or severe it is."

Older foster children in Kansas who face aging out of care will soon be able to choose their own families. In the past, they had to sometimes choose between being adopted or keeping important foster care benefits like free college tuition.
