Making Space for Self Care in the New Year 🌿✨

The new year is an ideal time to focus on self care and well being, especially within memory care. Consistent support with daily personal care such as dressing, grooming, bathing, medication routines, and mealtime assistance helps individuals with memory loss feel calm, supported, and less overwhelmed. With these needs gently managed, residents can conserve energy, enjoy familiar routines, and engage more fully in each day.

Memory care also brings relief to families. Loved ones are able to spend time together simply as family, sharing conversation and connection rather than focusing on care tasks. As the year begins, creating space for self care supports comfort, dignity, and peace of mind for everyone involved.

Buckle up! 🚗🎉 We’re traveling historic Route 66 from Chicago to St. Louis in VR — the very first stretch of the Mother Road, established in 1926. Along the way, we discover that Illinois has the longest surviving stretch of Route 66, pass the birthplace of the corn dog 🌭, spot giant roadside statues 🤖, and follow roads once used by Dust Bowl families heading west. From classic diners to Lincoln history, every mile tells a story!

Does Light Physical Exercise Impact Brain Function?

Light physical exercise plays an important role in supporting brain health, especially for older adults and those in memory care. Gentle, consistent movement helps regulate the body and mind, making daily life feel calmer and more manageable. When exercise is part of a familiar routine, it also provides reassurance and a sense of accomplishment.

🧠 Improves sleep quality, which supports memory, mood, and overall cognitive clarity
🧠 Reduces anxiety and restlessness by releasing calming brain chemicals
🧠 Increases alertness and focus throughout the day
🧠 Encourages routine and predictability, which supports confidence and orientation
🧠 Promotes joy and dignity through safe, achievable participation

Simple activities like walking, stretching, chair exercises, or light yoga can have meaningful benefits when practiced regularly. These moments of movement help residents feel more connected to their bodies and surroundings while supporting long term brain health.

Why Drinking Water Matters Even in Winter for Memory Care 💧❄️

Hydration remains essential during the winter months, especially in memory care. Cooler weather often reduces the feeling of thirst, but the body and brain still rely on proper fluid intake to function well. For individuals living with memory loss, dehydration can increase confusion, fatigue, dizziness, and discomfort.

In memory care settings, regular hydration supports cognitive function, helps regulate body temperature indoors, and promotes better digestion and overall comfort. Offering water consistently throughout the day, along with hydrating foods like soups, fruits, and warm herbal teas, helps residents stay nourished and supported even when it is cold outside. Small, steady reminders make a meaningful difference in maintaining wellness all year long.
