Another question I hear from patients is a simple one, but very hard to answer. "How did I get breast cancer?" The best way to answer this is that there is not one "cause" of breast cancer. Mostly there are risk factors that are well defined, such as increasing age, hormones, family history, etc. But there is not one direct cause for most breast cancers. Honestly, the best answer is probably genetics. At the core, cancers occur due to genetic alterations that then allow cancer cells to replicate and grow in an uncontrolled manner. Either those genetic alterations, or mutation, are inherited, or acquired in life. The real question is, what causes or triggers the genes in your body to change, allowing cancers to develop? Science is getting closer to answering this question, but for now, know your risk factors, and stay vigilant.

Now that it is breast cancer awareness month, I thought I would dive into the month with quick updates on advancements in the field of breast oncology, surgery, treatment, etc, and maybe even a video Q and A session. I'm always asked to stay in touch with our followers, so here goes...

I'll start off with a quick one, based on a common question I hear from my patients. Why do they have to smash my breast so hard during my mammogram?!? Good question...

The answer lies in the tissue that is inside one's breast. The breast is made up of several layers of glandular tissue that can easily overlap upon itself internally. Often times the lumps that women feel can be these glands that overlap. The compression during a mammogram smooths out these layers and takes away any overlap, thus making the image much clearer. Basically, a mammogram with little or no compression would not be useful, and would make it very difficult to see any subtle changes that might indicate a possible cancer. So, the more compression, the better the image quality for the mammogram.

Stay tuned for more updates to come...
