The 2026 N.D. measles case count rose over the weekend to 6 confirmed cases, including 5 in Pembina Co. and 1 in Williams Co. One person is hospitalized; four are over age 19. There are numerous public exposure locations that people contagious with measles visited. Others present at the identified locations on the dates and identified time spans could have been exposed to measles. See details and what to do if you were exposed to measles at hhs.nd.gov/measles.

Unvaccinated people are most at risk. However, as more measles cases circulate in the community, communities lose the benefit of community immunity (herd immunity), which is achieved when more than 95% of people in a community are vaccinated. This puts everyone at higher risk, especially the very young, individuals who are older, or immune compromised, and those who cannot be vaccinated for other health reasons.

A great way to examine the benefits of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination is to compare the risks associated with both vaccination and measles infection. Evidence shows that measles infections poses far more risks to children than vaccination does.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective at preventing disease and protect against severe complications of measles. Be sure to check that you and your family are up-to-date on MMR vaccination and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
