I was privileged to represent Blue Ridge AHEC at the NAO conference last week in Lexington from, Ky. I met some great volunteers on Monday as I helped stuff bags and get pins ready for attendees on Tuesday.
The rest of the week was filled with fabulous presentations, great Ky food and making new friends. See ya next time in Louisiana!!

Such a great time in my home state of Ky and the beautiful city of Lexington! My first NAO Conference and I met some awesome people from across the US. I’m looking forward to staying in touch.

Day Two of Healthcare Discovery Camp was a BLAST!! 🚨Campers started out the day with Atrium Health Floyd EMS and toured a Neonatal Intensive Care Transport vehicle, complete with a portable bassinet for fragile babies.

Next, they learned all about improving access to healthcare services using digital technologies with Lloyd Sirmans and SETRC’s mobile Telehealth Learning Center. 🖥️

Later that morning, the Rome Fire Department arrived and Erlanger’s Life Force medical transport helicopter flew in for a visit. Each of the campers got to climb in and explore both vehicles first-hand! 🚁

Last week’s Healthcare Discovery Camp for middle school students was AWESOME! In collaboration with Atrium Health Floyd and Georgia Highlands College, Blue Ridge AHEC hosted a great group of kids for three days of hands-on exploration of careers in healthcare.

On the first day, campers cared for a “virtual” patient using VR Simulation from UbiSim, then learned about the importance of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in healthcare, gearing up in gowns, masks and gloves with the help of instructors from the Georgia Highlands College Nursing Program.

Next, they learned about keeping their mouth, teeth, and gums clean and healthy from a wonderful group of GHC’s Dental Hygiene students. Campers wrapped up the day by exploring the different roles in a pharmacy with Carrie Billingslea from CVS Health, then practicing hands-only CPR and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) device to save a life!

Check out this truly inspiring group of students! Our Cohort 6 Blue Ridge AHEC Scholars have continued to amaze us over the last 2 years. They have juggled school, family, jobs, life in general, and still managed to complete all requirements of the AHEC Scholars Program. We were honored to have Dr. Gina Kertulis-Tartar, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Dalton State College, and Regina Gupta, Georgia Highlands College Director of Dental Hygiene, as special guests at our Scholars graduation ceremony on Friday. We are so fortunate to have such high-quality healthcare professionals entering the workforce soon! Congratulations, Scholars! We are so proud of you!
