Diaphragmatic breathing, or deep breathing, is a relaxation technique targeted at decreasing distress while increasing feelings of calm and relaxation physically and emotionally. The way this is achieved is by taking slow, deep breaths to calm uncomfortable physical symptoms, while also thinking of prompts, like counting or images, to distract your mind and calm distressing thoughts and emotional symptoms.

Benefits of diaphragmatic breathing include:
•Decreasing the stress hormone, cortisol, in your body
•Decreasing physical symptoms of anxiety or distress (lowers heart rate, lowers blood pressure, cools body temperature, calms shakiness, reduces muscle tension, etc.)
•Distracts the mind from overthinking, stressful thoughts or images, worries, and other negative thought patterns
•Slows rate of breathing so the body is expending less energy
•Reducing stress
•Improves immune system functioning

The beauty of deep breathing is that you can use this skill anywhere and it only takes as much time as you want it to. Like all skills, it should be practiced and used consistently to reap the full benefits and make it a habit.

If you continue to experience distress, anxiety, or other mental health struggles, and deep breathing alone isn’t enough, therapy is a great resource to learn additional coping strategies and work through and process emotional challenges. Contact us to make a change. Link in bio 🌱

In recent years, body positivity has been a trend that encourages challenging societal expectations of the body, and loving and celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes. While this thought process is great in theory, many people have a hard time loving their bodies, and can feel guilt and shame about their inability to fully embrace it. If you think you should feel something, but can’t, it’s easy to feel like you’ve failed.

Body neutrality means that you don’t have to have positive or negative feelings about your body, it just exists. It means accepting that you don’t need to love every part or feel in love with it everyday, and knowing that that is absolutely OK. You can accept your body even when you’re not head over heels for it. Body neutrality means not thinking about our bodies in terms of physical appearance, but focusing on what our bodies do and what they need. Rather than “punishing” yourself and your body with a workout for eating a certain number of calories or indulging in a weekend of Netflix, you workout to make your body feel better. For example, maybe you sit at a computer a lot for work - you would workout to stretch and use your muscles, or maybe to avoid a back ache. You use food and exercise as a way to fuel and bring comfort to your body, and don’t worry about the number on the scale.

Here are some ways that you can start practicing body neutrality:
•Stop talking about your body and how it looks in conversations. Refocus the conversation onto how your body feels.
•Eat what you want. Fuel yourself with the foods that nourish and sustain you, but don’t feel bad for enjoying snacks and desserts.
•Listen to your body. When you need to exercise and move, do it. When you’re exhausted and need some rest, rest.
•When you’re feeling bad about your body or even hate parts of it, don’t feel guilty, but refocus your thoughts on the great things your body can *do* (i.e. it’s strength and abilities).
•Be patient and keep at it.

If you struggle with body image to the extent that it negatively impacts your mood or relationship with food, contact us to make a change. Link in bio 🌱

Being human means having a complex set of emotions and the struggles that go along with them, but being a woman can mean having a whole host of additional factors impacting mental health.

Some common mental health issues, like anxiety and depression, impact women at a much higher rate, while others, such as postpartum depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, are exclusive to women. There are also social and cultural norms, as well as real and perceived societal expectations, that can weigh heavy on a woman’s mental health and sense of self-worth.

Some common women’s issues that can be addressed in therapy include:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Low self-esteem
• Prenatal and postpartum concerns
• Body image
• Lifespan and hormonal changes
• Trying to conceive and fertility
• Parenting struggles
• The mental load
• Balancing roles
• Social and cultural challenges
• And so many others…

If you relate to any of these issues and could benefit from mental health support, we’re here to help. Reach out to make a positive change. Servicing the entire state of Michigan through teletherapy, and in-person services available in Romulus, MI.

Lets be honest, change is hard. And if we’re being really honest, sometimes it SUCKS.

After a life change, you may notice feelings of anxiety, depression, or a combination of both. While these are completely normal and valid reactions to change, if they last longer than 3 months, it may be a sign of an adjustment disorder.

Adjustment Disorder is the presence of emotional or behavioral symptoms lasting 3-6 months after an event, change, or stressor, and the symptoms interfere with other important areas of your life, like relationships or work. The symptoms and reaction may seem unhealthy or excessive.

Symptoms include:
•Depressed mood
•Tearfulness
•Feeling hopeless
•Worry or nervousness
•Trouble sleeping
•Withdrawing from social supports
•Lack of appetite

Some ways to improve resiliency and decrease adjustment difficulties include:
•Connecting with social supports
•Spending time doing things you enjoy
•Using proper sleep hygiene
•Physical activity
•Not avoiding difficult thoughts or emotions
•Addressing problems as they come up

When the suggestions above just aren’t cutting it, talk therapy is a proven method of treatment for adjustment disorder.

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder that negatively impacts how you feel, think, and behave. It typically impacts many areas of a person’s life, such as relationships, work, and sleep, among countless others. It often causes feelings of sadness and loss of interest in activities that would typically bring you joy, but many people don’t know that it can also present as anger or irritability.

Symptoms of depression include:
•Feeling sad or numb
•Irritability
•Loss of interest in activities
•Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
•Eating noticeably more or less than your norm
•Fatigue and low energy
•Feeling worthless
•Feeling like things are hopeless
•Thoughts of death or su***de

While these symptoms can occur for people without depression at times, people with depression experience some or all of these symptoms for two weeks or more.

Despite feelings of hopelessness, there is plenty of hope and depression is very treatable. Common treatment includes counseling/psychotherapy and medication management, or a mix of the two. Coping skills for depression include being active and exercising, setting small and realistic goals, spending time with trusted people, avoiding isolation, following through with responsibilities such as cleaning and paying bills, participating in hobbies, and keeping up with personal care.

When battling depression, it is best to start small and give yourself lots of credit for every small (and large) accomplishment. If it feels too much to manage on your own or if you need a little extra help, therapy is a great place to start. Contact us for support. Link in bio 🌱

You have probably heard the term teletherapy, or telehealth/telemedicine/telemental, but what is it??

Teletherapy in mental health is when therapy or counseling services are provided through the use of technology, like video chat. That means that you don’t have to make the trek into an office or even live in close proximity to one!

The American Psychological Association has found that not only is teletherapy as effective as in-person therapy, but it’s actually better for some people who may get nervous or uncomfortable in settings that are unfamiliar to them. Teletherapy increases accessibility while decreasing the hassle of leaving your home.

If you’re in Michigan and feel that teletherapy may be right for you, contact us to get started.
