Watch out for potential road hazard ⚠️
** MID-WEEK STORM CHAOS **
After a rather meager pattern with weak frontal passages and storm systems, we will have a changing pattern this upcoming week! A strong low pressure system will move into the Great Lakes region, bringing with it a surge of all types of precipitation and winds.
All precipitation will begin as rain for all regions, with air temperatures as high as 50-60degF ahead of the storm. Expect potentially gusty winds of 30-40 mph with the approaching system late Wednesday evening through the overnight hours.
As we head into late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, this system will begin to rapidly depend and potentially 'bomb out' (drop 24mb or more in 24 hours or less) , wrapping cold air on the south side of the cyclone. Whenever this happens, those south of the low pressure system could change to a period of accumulating wet snow. The location of where this occurs is still highly uncertain, but it could occur somewhere between Indiana and Pennsylvania.
To make the process more complicated, a secondary low-pressure system could develop along the temperature gradient (baroclinic zone) along the Eastern Seaboard, which could also allow for a greater amount of cold air to mix into the system.
Eventually, as this system weakens and lingers around, lake effect snow and upslope-induced snow (higher elevations) will become the greatest concern and some areas could see snow linger into the weekend.
Key Takeaways and Questions:
- Rain begins late Wednesday as the system moves in.
- Low pressure could 'bomb out' late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The location of where this occurs is highly uncertain, although those to the south of this location could see a period of accumulating snowfall.
- Does a secondary low pressure form and draw colder air into Pennsylvania, which could also allow for more snow?
- Gusty winds of 30-40+ mph are expected throughout the day on Thursday.
- Lake effect and elevation snow possibly continues through Friday and into next weekend.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW:
Nothing in particular, but continue to stay tuned to updates as we progress throughout the week! This will likely not be a complete doorbuster rain or snow storm, but a deepening low pressure system will make for a fun forecast this week. Stay tuned and feel free to reach out with questions and/or concerns!
