𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 & 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 | April 1, 2026

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling in Chiles v. Salazar that effectively dismantles the legal protections against conversion therapy that more than 20 states had put in place to protect LGBTQIA+ youth.⁣
⁣
Conversion therapy is not therapy. It is not evidence-based. It is not ethical. Every major professional organization in mental health and medicine — the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and more — has unequivocally condemned these practices. ⁣The United Nations has classified conversion therapy as a form of torture. None of that has changed because of yesterday’s ruling, and none of it ever will.⁣
⁣
What makes this ruling particularly devastating is what it was built on. The therapist at the center of this case had not been prevented from doing anything — she was challenging a law based on what 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 happen. This sweeping, 8-1 decision, with implications for the entire country, was built on a hypothetical. And LGBTQIA+ young people across this country will bear the very real consequences.⁣
⁣
As a Licensed Associate Counselor, as an integrative wellness professional, and as a q***r person myself — I am telling you clearly and without hesitation: this practice has no place in ethical care. There is nothing to convert. There is nothing to fix. LGBTQIA+ identities are 𝘯𝘰𝘵 pathology. They are 𝘯𝘰𝘵 problems. They are people.⁣

With every new piece of anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and every ruling like yesterday’s, I will only become louder and more committed to showing up for this community — in my practice, in my voice, and in my advocacy.⁣

Trans people are, in my heart, some of the most phenomenal and sacred humans who walk this earth. The courage, the authenticity, the depth — it is breathtaking. It is an absolute honor to work alongside this community, and to advocate with and for trans lives, not just today, but every day.⁣

I’m also holding so much gratitude right now for the organizations and safe spaces right here in Arkansas who refuse to stop showing up. Who keep fighting when it would be so much easier not to. I see you, Intransitive 🫶🏻 Arkansas is lucky to have you.⁣

I’ve got some really good news to share — I’m now in-network with Aetna and Cigna for therapy sessions! 🎉

This has been a long time coming, and I’m genuinely excited to be able to offer insurance-based sessions for folks who’ve been navigating limited options in Arkansas. Insurance billing will begin in early to mid March, and self-pay (with a sliding scale for all) will also still be available.

In honor of Black History Month, I want to pause and name something that I believe doesn’t get said nearly enough in mental health spaces:

So much of what we now call “good therapy” exists because of the labor, brilliance, and lived wisdom of Black scholars, clinicians, activists, and community healers.

From bell hooks’ work on love, healing, and liberation, to Frantz Fanon’s writing on the psychological impacts of colonization and racism, to Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark’s research that helped dismantle legal segregation, to contemporary Black therapists who continue to challenge harmful, Eurocentric-centered models of care — the field of mental health has been shaped in deep, meaningful ways by Black people. Even when that labor has gone unnamed, appropriated, or dismissed.

As therapists, cultural responsiveness is not an “extra.” It is an ethical responsibility. If we are not actively examining how racism, white supremacy, and systemic harm show up in our work, then we are practicing in ways that can cause harm — even when our intentions are good.

To my fellow White therapists especially: this is an ongoing practice. Unlearning racism isn’t a one-time training. It’s a lifelong commitment to reflection, humility, repair, and action. Being anti-racist in our clinical work means we stay curious about our blind spots, we seek out education that challenges us, and we are willing to be uncomfortable in service of doing better for our clients and our communities.

Honoring Black History Month isn’t just about remembering the past. It’s about letting that history actively shape how we practice today — toward care that is more just, more liberatory, more decolonizing, and more human.

Happy Black History Month, y’all. I’m forever grateful to the mentors and colleagues within my life who have held me gently, called me in (and called me out), and consistently pushed me to educate myself, unlearn bias, and actively challenge the deeply ingrained White-centeredness in our field and in myself. Their presence has made me a better clinician, a better human, and advocate and ally.
