Happy World Doula Week!

This week, we are celebrating Caty Jolley, CD, CLC. Caty serves as MIBFN’s Implementation and Support Manager. She is someone who tirelessly blends big-picture thinking with the practical know-how to make things happen. Her passion, brilliant ideas, and kindness help shape our team and also the broader breastfeeding-supportive culture movement. She has a gift for finding solutions—whether it’s streamlining processes, ensuring accessibility, or connecting people with the right resources—all while keeping our shared mission at the heart of everything she does.

In addition, Caty is the owner of her small business, Mother Heart Birth Services. Here, she offers doula support, birth photography, placenta encapsulation, and more to families in the greater Flint area. It is important to her that families feel like they have the power in their birthing experience and she does everything she can to make that happen.

Are you a small business owner or dreaming of becoming one? The Michigan Breastfeeding Network is here to support you! Through our fiscal sponsorship program, we can help lay a strong foundation for your business or community-based organization. Reach out to us at hello@mibreastfeeding.org to learn more today!

Thanks for everything you do, doulas!

I'm a big fan of babywearing 👶🏼 Humans are Carry Mammals and our young expect to be held close

So, to carry safely...

Did you know, when you wear your baby in a sling, they should be Close enough to Kiss on the top of the head or the forehead...😘

This helps ensure baby is positioned safely and that you can keep an eye on them 👀

Baby's airway should always be clear so airflow is protected. This means their chin should be kept off their chest as well as their nose free from any squishy areas of your body - you don't want your baby's face face-planting into your breasts for example. They should be up at the hard part of your upper chest just under your chin. Being able to dip your head slightly to plant a kiss on their head or forehead is a good measure for this too (something you're probably unable to achieve if the baby's head is resting on your b***s!) 🍈

Your baby should be in view at all times i.e. you should be able to glance down and see your baby's face without moving any of the fabric - if they are too low (not Close Enough to Kiss) this probably won't be the case 🌟

If you are worried about positioning your baby in your sling(s), do look into your local sling library to get a check on fit, or guidance on the best option sling for you...or, ask a babywearing peer supporter like me! 🌟
