Work on a shade structure for the Roseburg Skate Park is underway this week.
The Roseburg Public Works Department hired installers to build a roughly 20-foot by 24-foot structure after Thrive Umpqua won a $95,000 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) grant from Umpqua Health Alliance on behalf of the City.
The new shade structure is being built on a flat concrete pad that held an earlier structure beside the skate park until the old structure had to be torn down about 10 years ago.
The grant also funded a drinking fountain with a water bottle filling station that has already been installed.
Cody Scott, owner of Paranormal Action Sports, said he’s been looking forward to a new shade structure to offer an escape from the heat on summer days. On Wednesday, Scott oversaw a free event for young BMX riders at the skate park while a construction crew worked on the shade structure nearby.
“I’m so excited. I’ve been riding my bike here for about 16 years. This was my home away from home,” said Scott.
He recalled how some who used the skate park trashed the last shade structure by adding graffiti, putting holes in the wood and even tearing out a picnic bench to use as a skate park obstacle.
Scott said he’s educating local riders and skaters about the community asset created by the new shade structure and encouraging people to protect the entire park and its features. He wants graffiti artists or taggers to stop spray painting anything in the park — and especially the concrete riding surface, because the paint makes concrete very slick to ride on.
“This is another home — something to protect, just as we would our own home,” Scott said.
