🌱 Let’s talk LUFFA!
Did you know luffa (or loofah) is actually a type of squash? When picked young, it’s tender and mild—add to stir-fries or soups, just like zucchini. But if left to mature on the vine, the inside dries into the fibrous sponge you probably recognize from your shower! 🧽✨

That means this amazing plant is a two-for-one: a tasty summer veggie and a natural, sustainable sponge. Use them in the kitchen for scrubbing pots or in the bathroom as an exfoliating sponge—zero waste and 100% compostable. 🙌
We’re growing these versatile beauties right here at Gathered Threads Farm and can’t wait to share them with you!

This week we’re taking it one step further — Margaret will be selling handmade soap with a luffa slice inside at market this Saturday! 🧼✨ Perfect for a gentle exfoliating scrub and a sweet way to bring the farm home.

👉 Have you ever cooked with luffa or used a luffa sponge? Tell us in the comments!

🌄 We took a little break from the farm last week to enjoy the Virginia State Fair — and it was such a fun day! So much to see and do — bunnies, chickens, cows, donkeys, veggie & plant exhibits, free entertainment shows, and of course… the rides! 🎡🐄🌽

Margaret got to milk a cow (which was on her wish list to do at the fair this year). The bumper cars were the big hit this year for both Nathanial and Margaret.

So inspiring to see so much local ag and community in one place. 💚

Did you know? 👀 Shiso is part of the mint family and tastes like a beautiful combo of mint, basil, and cinnamon with hints of clove & citrus. 🌿

It’s super versatile — add it to peanut sauce, sushi rolls, pesto, pasta salad, and so much more. But first, try it in this quick cucumber + shiso salad 🥒✨ (before the cucumbers disappear — summer crops are fading fast with the cooler temps!).

We’ll have fresh shiso at our IX Farmers Market stand until frost — come grab some and get inspired in your kitchen! 💚
