CAN INDIVIDUALS WHO DIE BY SU***DE RECEIVE A CATHOLIC FUNERAL AND BURIAL?
The Catholic Church's perspective on su***de is rooted in its teachings on the value of human life and the importance of compassion. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2282-2283), while su***de is considered a grave matter, the Church acknowledges that a person's responsibility and judgment may be impaired due to grave psychological disturbances or intense suffering.
The Church emphasizes the importance of God's mercy and leaves the judgment of individuals to God. As stated in the Catechism, "Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing su***de" (CCC 2282). This understanding is grounded in the Church's belief in God's infinite mercy and the possibility of a final moment of repentance.
In line with this, the Church permits Catholic burials for individuals who die by su***de, entrusting them to God's loving care. This approach is guided by the Church's teachings on the importance of hope, love, and healing. By offering a Christian burial, the community expresses its trust in God's mercy and compassion.
