Unstructured outdoor play supports children’s physical activity, creativity, social skills, and spatial skills. These benefits are even stronger when play happens independently without constant adult supervision (Loebach et al., 2021).
However, many children face barriers to this kind of play due to excessive screen time, restrictions on independent mobility, and worries about neighborhood safety, which limit opportunities for exploration and independent play (Loebach et al., 2021).
Guardians can support their children by limiting screen time and encouraging safe, independent, and unstructured outdoor play.
