Emerging research continues to highlight how deeply our environment impacts long-term health — including something as simple as light exposure.
A large prospective cohort study published in JAMA Network Open analyzed nearly 90,000 individuals over ~10 years and found a clear association between nighttime light exposure and cardiovascular disease risk.
Participants with the highest levels of light exposure at night had significantly increased risk of:
• Coronary artery disease (+32%)
• Heart failure (+56%)
• Myocardial infarction (+47%)
• Atrial fibrillation (+32%)
• Stroke (+28%)
Notably, these associations persisted even after adjusting for lifestyle factors, sleep quality, and preexisting conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
The proposed mechanism? Disruption of the circadian rhythm — a critical regulator of metabolic, hormonal, and cardiovascular function.
Key takeaway:
Optimizing health isn’t just about diet and exercise. Light hygiene matters. Prioritizing darker nights and minimizing artificial light exposure may be a simple, actionable step to support cardiovascular health.
