This tradition, known as the A’wee Chi’deedloh ceremony, is typically observed around three months of age. Whoever succeeds earns the honor of hosting the celebration, often preparing a meal of salted food and gifts to mark the occasion.

On July 1st, some people wave flags.
They wear red and white.
They sing big songs and shoot fireworks into the sky.

But not all of us celebrate that way.

In our family, we gather around a small fire.
We sit close together, quiet and listening.
We remember.

“Grandpa,” a little one asks,
“why don’t we wear red and white?”

Grandpa leans in and smiles,
“I wear the colours of my ancestors,” he says.
“Earth. Blood. Bone. Sky.”

The little one’s eyes grow wide.
She looks down at her ribbon skirt,
its colours glowing in the firelight.

“Before there was a Canada,” Grandpa says,
“there were Nations.

Nehiyawak.
Anishinaabeg.
Haudenosaunee.
Dene.
Inuit.
Tlingit.
Mi’kmaq.
And many more.

We were here with our own ways—
our own songs, laws, and languages.
Our own stars, stories, and spirit.”

The fire crackles.
The little one listens.

“Then came the lines.
Drawn on maps we didn’t make.
They built schools that weren’t safe.
Took children away.
Changed our names.
Stole our words.”

The fire goes quiet for a moment.
Even the wind holds its breath.

“But our people didn’t disappear,” Grandpa says.
“No. We remembered.
Even when it was dangerous.
We carried the songs in whispers.
The pipes in secret.
The lodges in our hearts.”

The little one leans closer.
“Are we still remembering now?”

“Oh yes,” Grandpa nods.
“We are remembering, rising, reclaiming.

The languages are coming back.
The youth are standing strong.
The grandmothers are still teaching.

The drum still beats.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

It never stopped.
It just waited.”

The little one smiles now.
“I think I hear it too,” she says.
“I want to light a fire when I grow up.”

Grandpa places a pinch of to***co into the flame.
“Good,” he says.
“Because our fires are sacred.

Not loud like fireworks—
but strong like roots.

They remind us of who we are.
And how far we’ve come.”

The fire glows.
The smoke rises.
The remembering continues.
