I’ve veered through both of the these approaches. Both abiding my shame or being swallows by it. The hard news is we have to engage our shame and insecurities if we want to grow and heal. The good news is we can do so from a place of kindness and hope that shame isn’t the first or final word in our stories. Wanna know more? Reach out and schedule a free consult!

I’m thankful for these thoughts looking over some old notes from a lecture from from 2018. I wish I could fully emphasize how important understanding the role of shame and moving forward in life is. Perhaps I’ll say more in another post- but it’s so important that the description of the garden of Eden (life as it should be) it’s not just “good” but that humans knew each other and “felt no shame”. When we get “stuck“ in life often it is because of the incapacitating power of shame in some area of our life. Sometimes we know it, and sometimes we’ve gotten so good at managing it that we don’t realize that shame is the big evil boss pulling the strings behind the scenes. And the beautiful thing is that healing shame, and bites us to not just feel “normal“ again, but be restored back to the roles God had for us all along, just like he had for Adam all along. Makers, Creators, Namers, World Caretakers. Want to find that spark again? Look for where shame is choking it off.

Everyone has more to them than meets the eye. This quote from Gottman makes me think about another quote from CS Lewis, where he talks about that we have “never met a mere mortal.” When we show curiosity and genuine interest to someone, there is a high likelihood that they will share more of who they are-their hopes, their losses, their dreams, their pains. Who do you need to show more interest to in your life?

We are built for connection. When I watch this video, I see the delight and joy of people having their language recognized. Watch it, every time he gets close or nails the spoken language there is a smile on their face.

Makes me think of how deeply we are built to want to be known, to be understood. If you’ve ever traveled to a foreign country you may know what this feels like some, and to a smaller degree in those moments where someone knows your hometown, that reference from your decade, your favorite show, etc. Our souls light up in these moments, and perhaps reveal the character of God to know us. When our language, our story, even the little details of our lives get noticed, recognized and known…this is a huge piece of what love is.

Former international music teacher, Matthew, guesses what language strangers are speaking. Let us know what language would you like to see in a Lineup!🆕 We ...

Emotional Healthy people aren’t people who are happy all the time, they’re people who have learned to know what they’re feeling, feel what they’re feeling, and express those feelings in authentic and healthy ways. (Read safe and honest). The “feel better” approach can look like everything from distractions, addictions, toxic positivity, slapping Bible verses or quick quotes onto my problems and emotions. Wholeness looks like growing more comfortable with my “unpleasant” emotions, sitting with them, and letting God meet me in them. Growth happens when I move toward my emotions, to understand and welcome them, instead of “fix” them.

Yes it’s another Tolkien quote…I’m quite the fan. Sam’s words remind me of the grit it takes to name when things are bad and hard and the even grittier task of wrestling with hope of hunting for the good. Often we either run away from naming where harm and darkness have come in our lives or we are in the all too familiar place of lost hope. I think in the tension of darkness and hope is where “the magic” happens. It’s the place where resurrection can take place.

These are the first words from God to humans after they ate the fruit in the garden. It is such a kind and penetrating question. God is inviting radical honesty and the invitation back to relationship in the midst of brokenness and shame.
Making sense of how we got to where we are helps us begin to hope - hope that runs through an honesty with our reality, not trying to get around it.
God meets us where we are, not where we wish we were.
