ℹ️🌿 THE MOST DIFFICULT EMOTION: SHAME, DISCONNECTION, COURAGE AND LOVE |

We seem to be soft-wired to feel close to one another. We’re designed to give each other comfort and support. We’ve evolved to nurture and care for one another, to open our hearts to the people we love.

Yet in relationships, too often we feel frustration, anxiety, and distance. What’s going on? What gets in the way of the closeness and connection we long for?

One of the things that gets in the way is shame.

As unexpressed feelings accumulate, a greater degree of muscular tension is necessary to keep them under wraps.

A child who is repeatedly punished for emoting learns to be afraid of inner emotional experience and tightens [armors] the musculature of her body in an effort to hold feelings in and to banish them from awareness.

Holding your breath is a further manifestation of armoring. It is an especially common way of keeping feelings at bay, as breathing naturally brings your awareness down to the level of feeling.

Parentification is a cause of invisible childhood trauma. It occurs when the roles are reversed between a child and a parent, where the child has to step up as the caretaker, mediator, or protector of the family. It is a form of mental abuse and boundary violation.
